Ok, I know there was a thread like this recently, but....

I am thinking of becomming a veggie (well with eggs, fish, but no meat or poultry).

I have many anxieties mainly losing size, strength. I feel though that I can replace most of the meat sources of nutrients / protien with supplements and fish in addition to my already ridiculous intake of powder protien.

The other thing is I like meat (even though I don't eat red meat often)....

Anyway, I would like to hear some views on vegetarian bodybuilders and perhaps some advice (hey, maybe even some veggie recipes that don't taste like shit. :) )

Its going to be much harder to get your
calories in, not to mention prepare your meals.

Just curious, but are you concerned about the recent
out-break in the livestock?

i still eat beef but let me share with you what i did when i was a young lad....be right back

I will first give a bio to my knowledge in this subject which may disturb many of you but I feel it must be told. My father was the number one man in the country setting up and running the kill floor and it is also what killed him.

He first started working in a slaughter house when he came home from the Korean war. Back then it was all done by hand, that part I won't get into since it has no bearing on what you are eating at your table now.

Now to what I know, did and saw. I was never forced to work it was my choice .

My dad setup places like Iowa beef packers and Monforts which are two of the largest.

I was 13 years old when i first started working in one and i did it for 3 years. Now the reason I'm going into all this is because I think all of you should know what goes on the this process and i'm going to take it step by step so i hope you have a strong stomache..

My dad let me do all of the jobs in the whole process, you have to be 18 to work in a place like this but I was a big kid and my dad ran the place so the USDA inspectors turned their head.

Ok enough about the back ground now lets get down to the details.....

How could you not consider fish meat? If you eat fish you are eating meat and therefore not a vegetarian.

There are different kinds of vegetarian....ovo, lacto etc....

I seriously doubt Gary wants to become a hardcore
vegetarian........(Well...I hope not :) )

THE PROCESS:
To this very day its such a vivid memory that i can even remember the smell. We were killing as much as 1000 head of cattle a day (mass killing)...This is a very dangerous place to work , i will go into details that you may not want to hear after i describe the process...

First the cattle are out in the fenced yard all which is sectioned off and fill so full the cattle cant even walk around. they wait there until its time to go up the shoot. they are covered in feces which is where you will get the ecoli bacteria.

ok now the day starts at 5am with a guy out side running the cow up the ramp one by one into what we called the chute. it would lock one cow in and this is where it would be killed ( now keep in mind they DONT die right away)...this is done with a tool called a stunner gun...a guy will hold this tool up against the skull of the cow and pull a lever sending a 4 inch steel rod in and out of the skull..( in a KOSHER kill the rabbi will use a 16 inch knife and slit the throat 1000 times a day)..some days we had the Rabbi's in but most were just the standard kill.

now the cattle all inline know what is about to happen and they fight all the way up. they can smell the death just like i could. now keep in mind i was just a kid and i shouldnt have been doing this work..when you see a animal with tears in its eyes right before it gets killed it does affect you.

so now after they shoot the cow in the head it drops to the floor still moving because the nerves are still alive and kicking...now it goes to the shackler...this guy puts a steel clamp on both hind legs and then hoists the cow upside down..from this point on its all on a motor chain and doing a 1000 head a day its a fast process...now after its upside down they bleed the cow by slitting the throat form there the head is cut off and thrown on to a table where its completely boned out...NOTHING goes to waste..the brains, eyes, tongue. now it goes to another guy who slits it down the middle and removes the spleen and stomach ( the stomach is also cut open..)..now it goes to another guy who use a huge hydrolic clamps and pull the hide off...now you have a cow with no head..no cuts and no hide...then it goes to another guy who uses a huge power saw and splits it down the middle...from here it goes into the cooler and ready to be cut into peices, box and shipped out to yes your favorite supermarket....

now the dirty part that the indusrty doenst want you to know....

you have men working with knives and are cutting themselves...i seen this many many times and the blood does get on the meat and NOTHING is done about it...we would have maybe 2 or 3 USDA inspectors on the floor but they would either not see it or do nothing about it...and im quite sure its even worse today then when i did this which was 20 years ago...back then wages were double of what these men are being paid today and they work like slaves...so now you run the risk of human blood infecting the meat..you have guys droping their knives on the floor where there is waste, blood, guts ect ect...they pick the knife up without cleaning it and cut on the meat..INFECTED...

its hard to really describe what it looks like on the kill floor but its mass killing and blood is everywhere along with feces, and whatever else is falling all over the place.

the worst part is the feces which is where you can and will be affected with ecoli...the process is dirty and the USDA inspectors dont see a fraction of what gets by...I have seen so many slabs of beef that should have been destroyed and never shipped out....also there are sick cows that get killed ,..many times the inspectors will catch this and they will destroy the cow outside but trust me many many get by and for a reason...$$$$$ the owners of these packing houses dont give a shit about tainted meat..

i rarely eat beef these days and when i do all i can think about is what i just told you...you are at great risk and i feel its worse now then when i was around it....

i know when you go to the market and see it stamped USDA prime meat in a nice little package you dont even have a clue to where or how it got in that neat little package....

once the meat is infected and it doesnt matter if its from the blood of a cut worker or the feces from the cow....once it on the meat you will be eating it and not even know it....trust me folks what im telling you is the truth and i would say if you bought 10 NY strips at least 6 of them are infected....it may not be enough to make you sick but one day you may get that one steak that was the killer...i feel that in beef industry there are many sick cows being processed and sent to the markets when these animals should be destroyed....this is what is going on in europe now with the mad cow disease...

i hope that this hasnt offended anyone but not many people will talk about this subject in detail.

peace

Good post almost to much detail.Ido have a differant veiw on the consumption of meat though. Human beings are desighned to eat digest and utilize meat. Our ancesters lived of of it solely for most of ther existance.Ther were no fat slow cave men .Only the lean muscular ones survived. Its only my opinion but it makes sence to me that as bodybuilders(animals made up of red meat ourselves) That red meat would be the form of protein easiest to assimilate and build lean muscle for ourselves.

Hmm thats a sick place to work, but I don't mind eating the meat anyless, mmm human blood supplement my own...

As hard as you try unfortunenatly you can't really convey what its really like w/o seeing it first hand.

I was a vegetarian (NOT A VEGAN!!! pesco ovo vegetarian...ate dairy and seafood) from age 13-21. You can do it with alot of fish, salmon in particular is good, plus and iron supplement. But salmon is expesive, so that was a draw back, and chicken and beef is cheaper. So I noticed a much better physic when I broke that vegetarian routine personally.

If you female, watch you iron....I played endurance sports, low bf, lost period, and very anemic.....be careful of that!!! Without red meat you must make sure you are including other high iron sources:)

Good to see your post got back here buddy! I do not know much about being a vegetarian but I imagine it would be a lot harder to get in your cals like some other has said. I could be mistaken but I think Ulter is a vegetarian as well and he may have some good ideas to share. Good luck on what ever choice you make

Actually drew, human's are not "designed" to eat meat. Huamn beings are omnivores and don't require meat at all and do better without it than with. In the long ago past, the meat humans ate was FAR more lean and natural than today's bastardized versions.
In response to the original post, you won't have ANY trouble without poultry or red meat...kiss them good bye and say hello to a healthier diet.

I'm a so-called vegeterian, I only eat fish, eggs, tuna, tofu, and protien mrp as my protien sources. I've been one for about 2 yrs now and I can say that I feel much healthier and don't miss the burgers at all! There are many ways to get enough food in you other then eating infected, chemically red meat.

"This is why we cook meat."

Amen........I dont care if it had blood and shit all over it and got hoesed off.......once its cooked, It's gone.....But I'm sorry you were traumatized in that way:(

My Aunt is a vegeterian and tries to supplement with soy, tofu and stuff.

She has always looked like crap since avoiding meat. She is real skinny looking and has had health problems.

I have seen others that don't look as bad, but never seen a vegetarian that had any decent muscle mass.

Can anyone tells us what properties meat has that benefits muscle growth, especially excellerated as with AS.

LOL it didnt really bother me until later on in life at 13 i was too young to know any better..it was some pretty wild shit though...nothing like watching the rabbi taking a 18' blade and slitting the throat of a live animal a 1000 times a day....

i agree...back to the subject...how would you bulk? eat a shit load of beans?

I'm that kind of veggie. Get ready to eat a butt load of tuna. My protein staples are milk, eggs, cottage cheese, tuna, tuna, tuna and protein shakes.

Here's a recipe you'll love:

1 can tuna
10 oz milk
2 tlbs Fat Free Quick
throw it in a blender and hit liquify

Pinch your nose a chug it bro

I must say that the a simple breakdown of my current nutrition intake would be:-

20% Fat - Poly / Mono Unsaturated fats :- such as Safflower oil, extra virgin olive oil, cod liver oil.... you know the kind of thing

40% Protein - Mostly protein powder, eggs, milk, fish, chicken (maybe I'll lose this), also I eat lots of veg. and fruit so I guess there is a small amount in this.

40% Carbs - Rice, Pasta, Potatoes, Fruit, Carb drinks, occasionally bread.

ok, I have treat foods and drinks 1/2 weekly:-

Fish 'n Chips
Steak sandwich
Lean Hamburgers
Doughnuts
Ice Cream (especially at bulking up time).
Beer
Wine

So, as you can see I don't have that much red meat in there anyway, and I'm not that small (!) so I am not sure if taking the next step is such a big thing. Of course the wine will have to stay.

Then again, I do eat 6 chicken breats a day....

I have been virtually vegan for 20 years (I occassionally eat free-range eggs). As long as you know your foods and can balance your macronutrient intake I can't see any problems going ovo-lacto vego. The only time I ever have probs is when I'm dieting for a show.....then I live on soy protein shakes (I'm female so not too worried about the phytoestrogens), veggies and whole grains and nuts. I have found it an incredibly healthy lifestyle for me, and in no way has it hindered my ability to add quality muscle mass. My favorite protein foods are beans, lentils, chick peas, nuts and seitan (wheat gluten). Honestly if you're willing to eat whey, eggs, cottage cheese and fish then I can't understand how you could be short of protein!

But I have to say that giving up meat when you really enjoy eating it will be the hardest thing. You haven't said why you want to give up meat. But if you always feel that your missing out, and are constantly tempted to drive through your local burger shop then it won't be easy going vego.

Ever see a pic of Bill Pearl? He looks better at 50 then most 25 year olds do.

All the support to you for your decision Julez.

I think this was a good post and I never really put much thought into the steak I eat every day for the past 4 months ....

I was veg for 5 years. I am now semi-veg - in that I drink milk, eat eggs, fish and fowl..

It will not harm you as a bb at all if you choose lacto-ovo (milk and eggs) or semi-vegetarian (as above, like me) vegetarianism...

Think about it.. all the protein in milk, eggs, whey protein, fish, fowl....

..and in reality, hom many people get much of their protein from red meat?

Try it..

Right on Bigpun, Bill Pearl is a perfect example a vegan.......good mass for veg, you think? uhmmm......yeah.
