Trap Training

I'm currently doing a push/pull split where I hit my pull days on Tuesdays and Fridays. I always deadlift on Fridays, so do you think I would overtrain my traps if I did heavy barbell shrugs on Tuesday?

Personally I don't feel that I need more trap work than what I get from deads. If you feel you need more work on them then go ahead. The only big problem I see here is that if you do heavy shrugs on tues you may or may not be fully recovered and ready to go by friday. This could affect your deads negatively.

Cheers,

That's exactly what I was concerned about. Thanks Scotsman...

if you want bigger traps, deads help but you can make them bigger by doing olympic hang high pulls, for sets of 4x6-8 on the 2nd workout for pulls..
i wqas not happy with my trap size from the deads alone, i am now happy after doing high pulls.. they also work side lats and upper back. its really a great compound movement imo..

This is an exercise I've wanted to incorporate into my routine for some time, but I don't think my current gym would allow it. Is there a way to do it where you don't drop the weight straight into the ground? Would it be a problem to hold onto the weight after the pull?

Do them hang style so you never put the weight down until you finish your last rep. Like doing hang cleans for reps.

i only deadlift now for them and rack lockouts, it plenty. when i did train them i did power shrugs which are basically what the other explained. like a half hang clean

exactly, the whole point is to not do it from the floor, that would be a power high pull, hanging high pull is you lean foward just a few inches until the bar is just above the knee then you pull up under the neck or close to it.. then repeat, the bar never goes lower then yourt knee for the entire set.
exrx.net has an example of someone doing it.

Got it...i actually found a link that shows a pretty good vid. I just went through the motion here at my computer and I can feel it big time in my traps. Thanks again...
