torn acl, train 1 leg ?

hey guys, whats up? ok, 2 weeks ago i tore my left knee acl at work,in your opinion, would it be wise to keep training my good leg? i didnt ask the doc yet, but he did say keep training my upper body, should be fine he said,. so far so good, just a few adjustments to my exersizes.but im getting conflicting advise, e.g. i could easily reinjure by the strength inbalace or both legs benefit from training 1 leg,has anyone had such an issue? let me know if you did and what you did, please.thank you for any advise you may have for me and have a great day!
 
Training is, for the most part, specific to each limb, if you work one limb and not the other, the training adaptions will occur in that limb, but not the other one, although there has been postulated that there is a limited systemic effect (obviously), so training one leg MAY help keep the cardiovascular response in check on a sytem wide level, Although, you will still be growing one leg while the other one is shrinking from detraining.

Everything from the blood lactate level, to the metabolic properties of the untrained muscle will regress toward detraining, I personally would train the good leg if I was in your situation, just because of the cardiovascular effect on the systemic level, and One good leg MAY help the rehabilitation of the detrained leg when the time comes.

All just my opinion. I am not qualified to give that type of advice, but no one else answered your thread.
 
thank you cj for the advise, i know its not a medical opinion,and im getting all kinds of different takes on what i should do,a buddy of mine at the gym is going to see what his friend thinks, a sports phisiologist of some type,but i guess i will altimatley find out what to do,or can do, after my surgery, which should be comming up soon pending approval, again cj, thanks for taking the time to give me some helpfull advise, have a good one!
 
had acl surgery and the imbalance after is quite marked. keeping a maintenance training base in noninjured leg is good as it will get one helluva workout carrying the bulk of your body post surgery initially. its a great time for upper body specialization and lower body maintenance/flexibility/conditioning (high tension bike work is good through all of this). Some areas you can strengthen pre surgery on the injured leg are the adductors and abductors so that when you get the new tendon, that the rest of the knee joint is in the best position possibly...
Post surgery you'll be rehabbing for a bit and then able to better launch into regaining balance between both legs.
 
This thread reminds me of the guy who starred in Lady in the Water. The guy only worked one arm and one leg and looked like a freak. One arm was skinny as all get out. The other was well developed.

hey bro, sorry to hear about your injury, i tore all 4 major tendons in my left knee due to an accident last year. after surgery to fix the tendons, i concentrated on working mostly my bad leg, and only doing maintenence for my good leg. I'm still playing catch up for that bad leg 14 months later. I'm waiting on a knee replacement surgery in march, which will involve 2 months rehab. I found that after replacing my tendons, I could work hamstrings on my bad leg harder than i can work quads and calves. Maybe you can try that, keep your hamstrings up to par if it doesn't hurt. I assume you will have surgery to fix the acl. There's just such a difference in size between my bad leg and my good leg, that i am going to concentrate on catching up and not creating more of an imbalance between the two. Hope you recover quickly. it sucks working around an injury.
