Too much Protien???

Hey guys, I am pretty new to this and I was wondering if it is possible to take in too much protien on a daily basis. I am 5'7 and weigh 165, I find it rather easy to get 275-350 grams of protien every day, sometimes more.I think that this is a good thing, just want to be sure! All of this comes by way of fish, meat, protien shakes, and more meat!!! However I have a slow metabolism, And gain fat easily!! I remain under 40 grams of Carbs a day trying to avoid gaining unwanted fat. I am in the gym 4-5 days a week and i have seen some improvement in strengh! Which is great. I just hope i am not missing something?? My goal is to lose fat, while still gaining lean mass!! Any pointers would be appreciated!!! Thanx, MiKE

There is a good article in the current Muscle Media about protein myths, I cant remember what it entailed, but it touched on this very topic. Sorry I wasnt much help, lol.

Under 40 grams of carbs a day? I'd worry more about not getting enough carbs to build muscle...

There is no science that suggests that an intake of too much protein could cause an adverse health reaction. But keep in mind that excess protein, if not utilized properly, can add to fat storage.

^^^^ I was under the impression the Protien built muscle tissue, and Carbohydrate is a enerygy scource??? I have plenty of energy, so how do the carbs factor in to actually "build" muscle? Someone please explain! And I am lifting, so wouldn't that be considered using Protien properly??? MIKE

Okay bro, I'll make this simple but if you want to build strategies for successful physique transforming results it's imperative you learn more basics about the body for yourself. I'm willing to bet most of the brainiacs on this board are self taught...

Carbs are of primary importance to bodybuilders (like us) seeking to maximize lean muscle mass. They are simply "protein sparing" which means that if you have sufficient carbohydrates present (full glycogen stores), protein will be used primarily for growth and repair. If you do not have sufficient carbs, you may use protein for fuel (or energy as you put it), instead of for growth and repair of muscle.
Carbs are anti-catabolic in most instances... carbs eaten right after training will help prevent the breakdown of muscle. Studies reveal that carbs combined with protein are more effective at providing an anti-catabolic effect, as well as replentishing glycogen.

The only time when you have to worry about getting fat from eating too much protein is when you forget to lift. I don't care if all the protein came from plain shrimp, you eat SHITLOADS of it and don't lift and/or do cardio, your body will start to convert it, albeit slowly, into fat. However, eating tons of shrimp, tuna, etc. and not lifting is a helluva better than the average American, who eats shitloads of sugary snacks and high carb foods AND STILL DOESN'T LIFT OR DO CARDIO. That's the reason why "fat organizations" such as NAAFA exists.
