Thrower sets a School Record!!!

:)

One of the throwers that I've been working with has been trying to break a school record for a while now and we had decided 3 weeks ago that TODAY would be the day.

50% bodyweight on the bench press for reps.

She was in a 3 way tie at 28 from the Spring of 2003 and someone broke the record with 30 last Friday.

Today...she got on the scale at 149 so we used 75 pounds on the bar. We have been working on her form for this...as well as her shoulders and triceps for higher reps.

36!!!!!

She would have had 37 but she racked the bar JUST before her triceps locked out...so we couldn't give it to her. It was SOO cool, she smiled a lot and was very proud, and the other throwers in the gym were gathered around her yelling at her.

True grit...

Now...she wants that Power Clean record...170 for the record, 150 to get her picture and name on the wall (CCJ, she is still working in it:) )

Awesome :) Whats is her Powerclean at now ?

She can nail 135...much more and her poor form causes her to miss. I think that she is the ONLY woman on the campus who can power clean that close to her bodyweight. I think that the woman who did 165 weighed 220 at the time...but I might be wrong.

This is Emily's first semester ever doing power cleans though...and only her 2nd semester lifting weights.

That's pretty cool. Congratulations to her :)

I'm curious though... If she's a thrower, why bother concentrating on high rep maxes? It doesn't make sense in terms of what she's training for, even though breaking a record is nice.

She wanted to break a record...

Breaking the record did several things that are good for her and the team.
1) Brought the team together helping and yelling for her.
2) It shows that the Throwers are the strongest on campus (according to the record standards).
3) Gave her a good goal and something to accomplish.
4) She knows that she is getting stronger and what we are doing is working.
5) Season doesn't start for 3 more months.
6) The bench press is the least important exercise for them in the gym (compared to the other lifts that they do).

I see how the record will spur the team to keep lifting and training hard.

I can imagine that in 3 months time when the season starts they will be in amazing shape thanks to you.

They do the work...I just do all that I can to help. They have had some good laughs when I've tried to throw...lol. I'm good for comedy relief:)

Seriously though...they are always there and they always work hard. It does't take much to help people who are so dedicated.

Yeah...a little. They are just kids without direction at the moment. They STILL don't have a coach...

I've tried to encourage an environment where people go for PR's in the gym...no matter what weight, reps, or sport. Hit or miss...the attitude of 'going for it' is often an attitude of a winner and also brings a team together...IMO.

CCJ...Emily said thanks a ton for all the help on the power clean. We are working on it but we have a long way to go.

good for her bfold. they may not have a coach, but when i was there, they dont seem to be lost and blindly wandering now. you've inspired them.

Awesome job on that record. And the clean is impressive too. I'd be hard pressed to clean that close to my bodyweight. She will certainly be a force when the season starts.

i think what you are doing is awsome b fold
my track team did not have a throws coach either, we could have used you
but we were the TIGHTEST group, guys and girls
we practiced, lifted, and ate together
always working to help each other....we felt a lil betrayed by the university and head coach for not having a throws coach

you are doing more for them than you think

Don't try to act like a tough guy lol. It is an awesome feeling when the kids you train progress, and break there records. It is almost better then setting a PR yourself. Be proud of yours and her accomplishments, and don't be afraid to gloat. You've both worked hard and deserve all the accolades coming your way.

On a side note, when are we going to see some more vids of her Power Cleaning?

Hopefully next weekend. She does them lightly or high pulls on Tuesday and power cleans on Friday. Everyone was gone today getting ready for the Cross-country meet on Saturday this week.

That's awesome. They are lucky to have a dedicated person who cares about their development both as athletes and I am sure as people. I am sure that you are helping them more than you will ever know or admit to and you deserve to reap some of the rewards this is bringing. Keep up the good work.

Cheers,
Scotsman

I love it when I hear about female athletes excelling! I love the competition, teamwork, success, blood, sweat and tears! Chicks rule! ;)
