the greatest armies in the world

man for man.....the Vikings.

Nothing would scare a town like news that the Vikings were coming.

It took centuries for great hordes of marauding barbarians to help defang the Roman empire.

No military empire has ruled like the Romans did.

I'm saying apples and oranges...the horror we can inflict is far worse than any neanderthal with a broadsword.

Pushing around a computer mouse or joystick doesn't enter my equation for a great army.

If I obtained the deadliest virus that is humanly imaginable, would that make me a great army?

My theory is that we hit the horror with WWI and WWII.These men served years in the horror of modern war...my own father fought for over four years without setting his feet on friendly ground....My six months in the desert was nothing..,.

The horror of the mechanized aggression of WWII and WWI frequently pales in comparison to many battles fought mono-e-mono in bygone centuries.

We still talk about Guadacanal and Iwo Jima in hushed tones. Our casualties were around 20,000/island after the dust cleared. Horrible to be sure.

There have been a great many battles with casualties exceeding 80,000 men in a single day.

There are exceptions like The Battle of the Bulge, Stalingrad, and others.

What were the casualites at Gettysburg? That was about the worst day of Civil War.

Every battle you mention is from the age of mechanized war....which most historians date from the US Civil War. Picket's charge is a horrible example of what happens with war. The Somme saw 58k British casualties in a day, the worst casualties they ever saw as an empire. Ghenghis could only dream of that kind of slaughter...

most (~90%) of american divisions had to endure less than a year in the field
june1944-may1945

most German divisions went from circa sept1939/may1940 until march1945

4 years or so

Apples and oranges....Germany has had the greatest impact on modern military operations post Napoleon...I'll stand by that statement. Ghengis and Attila had their time but Germany made their mark and I don't see it changing in the forseeable future. When it comes to lasting changes we Germans are under represented. All modern military tactics are based on the Wehrmacht model. This isn't a cut on you....

germany made their mark, but alot of it was due to their allies . ss handzar was the largest ss division .
