the greatest armies in the world

sort of overrated
regular German units were just as "tough" and often performed much better
SS received equipment and supply priority so thus they should perform well
3rd SS (totenkopf) and 5th SS (viking) had stellar combat performance records and those two divisions fought exclusively on the eastern front
True, the SS took disproportionately high casualties in Poland and France. After those two campaigns they focused less on political indoctrination and more on tactics in their training.

LOL at comparing a 2000 yr old scutum and gladius to today's body armor and a rifle.
Excavations of the battle of Teutoberg Forest gave forensic evidence that the average height of a Roman legionaire was about 5'4" while the average height of a German barbarian was 5'9 1/2"...the average height of a modern American male. We Germans are a rough people or at least we used to be.....just sayin'. :)

Sorry bud but after 6 years of living in Germany I can say with first hand knowledge they are beaten puppies these days.

The ss in Poland were just to spread out to be more effective. They were just pushing to hard.

That's why I added the used to be caveat....my grandfather was a proper Prussian officer. Pintoca and I had a little discussion because he had never heard a German describe himself based on geographic location. There was a marked difference between Prussian and non-Prussian officers. I believe it was Wilhelm Keitel that received the compliment that he worked as hard as the Prussian officers in the general staff.

Is being an overly cautious boot licker a bad thing? Every butter bar knows you attempt a breakout from encirclement as soon as possible. :) He didn't even have the decorum to end his life like a proper officer. :) There was an instance where all of the officers from an artillery regiment gathered in the last days of 6th army, drank the last of the Schnapps and put their service sidearms in their mouths.
