i'm stoked.
My boss recently realized how slow my computer is when i'm designing. he actually flipped. on top of that, i'm his tech support for his own computer and my system is outdated.

Tomorrow i'm giving a presentation to Novartis in Switzerland. While I'm running that (webinar), I'm getting a new computer installed with a crap ton of memory, best video card available, best processor (i don't know details on any of it), and two 19" monitors.
also, windows 7 and office 2007 of course, and i'm ordering the latest adobe suite.

Plus, I had our IT guy allow me access to youtube and pandora, which is going to annoy the shit out of my coworkers. lol

My work bought me a $1,700 Lenovo ThinkStation. I run dual NEC Multisync 20wmgx monitors on it. Score.

Ah, to have a boss again. btw: I know ur not a geek because you use terms like "crap ton of memory, best video card, best processor" instead of specifics. That's okay, there's hope for you yet. Heck we have hope for pick3.

buy an alienware with quadros.... blow shit right out of the water!!!

i work at a computer company.
I'm not buying my own stuff at all.

We work closely with microsoft corporate so our IT manager is getting me all the latest stuff.

oh, and bakemeacookie, I am a little bit of a geek, but I don't have specifics because I've been too busy with this webinar today to get involved.

Alienware is a consumer gaming rig acquired by Dell....not exactly corporate or commercial class.

Nope :)
Alienwares are not just for gaming, they are also used for high end graphic edit and design, to the point that Lucas Arts was one of our biggest clients, a while bck Alienware had several laptops that come with DUAL Quadros which would kick the snot out of a Mac (everyone says Macs are the shit for design/graphics) also when u buy one of these PCs they are super upgradable so you know you have a laptop that will stay current in the market for a good two years, and fulfill the needs of what you want it to do for at least 5 years... hell II have an Area-51 m5700 which is an oldie but a goody, they are from 05 and they are awesome, most USED old systems run for +$500 and up on Ebay for a reason.... bitches are awesome :D and dont even get me started on the liquid cooled desktops.... alienware has been the only true place I have been proud to work, I loved it and learned so much.... shame Dell got it's claws on it.... (affected me as an employee not so much the brand/quality....)

Alienware is about as overpriced as it gets lol. Newegg ftw.

Indeed, never said it was cheap :D well if you know how to build your own stuff I'd go newegg or tiger direct

@ RW I bought mom a really good Acer (also same or slightly better specs on a Toshiba) for $400, has core2duo T6600 I think (too lazy to check) 3GB and 260GB HD if you want a new line of processors this one seems pretty fair:

Walmart.com: Acer 17.3" Aspire AS7745-5632 Laptop PC with Intel Core i3 Processor and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit: Computers
Take a look at the specs and price, buy any other within those specs compare and shop :)

Lot of things in play: do you want intel or amd? new i processors or simple dual core? what size LCD? that Walmart one is just off the top of my head/example....

You tell me hermana. I just want whatever gear I need for basic, general use. I'm guessing I don't need anything fancy though. :)

walmart, as of a few months ago (don't know about right now) was the best place to buy a computer. They were underselling them.
Staples is also alright.

I use the term "buttload" for everything, even if I know a machine's horsepower, a computer memory device's storage capacity, or the number of benzodiazepines I have in my possession ... my quantifier of choice is "buttload". It's a descriptor that makes me happy as it rolls off my tongue.

Just sayin'

Grats, you managed to MO-up a computer nerd thread!

I have dual 24in, top of line video card, dual quad cores, 24gigs of memory 2 data 500 gig drives and admin rights. I still bring that beast to a crawl.

then that Walmart one should hold you up for a loong time, go for it, look up the model and shop around :)

Any idea why Bestbuy doesn't even carry Acer at all? I was all set to bust out the debit card. I hate to support Wal-mart, but it may come to that.

by the way remember Emachines and Acer are the same thing... I'm not sure if that laptop I showed you has bluetooth and a webcam, u can always get external ones for the price but just an FYI
