Switching Routine?

brew

New member
Hey guys, I was running a split before I broke my leg and I thought I was making great gains. Maybe slowing a little towards the end though. My question is after doing a split for around 8 months would switching to a 5x5 after my legs heals be a good thing? Or will the couple months I'm off due to injury be enough to keep the gains coming on my split?

What routines do you guys switch between if at all?

My old split was;

Back & Tris
-deads
-rows
-Lat pull downs
-Shrugs
-Tri extensions or Skull crushers
-Tri push downs

Chest & Bi's
-Flat BB bench
-Incline DB bench
-DB Flys
-Seated incline DB curls
-Reverse BB curls or 21's

Legs & Shoulders
-Squats
-Calf extensions
-Front & lateral raises
-Upright row
-Reverse pec deck

I do 3-4 sets of 6-10 reps, increasing weight every set. Since I am hitting the major 5x5 lifts in my split would it still be beneficial to switch it up because of the format? Should I try something else like just dropping weight and increasing to 15-20 reps?

Any critique is welcome:D

I think you should take it slow with your leg at first, but you know your body better than me. I would definitely ask your Dr. and clear any lower body training with him first.

Although you current split doesn't look too bad...I will almost always recommend the 5x5 or similar type splits over a body part split. I think you should train "lifts" not muscles. Focusing on adding weight to the big lifts will get you big and strong provided your diet is geared for it.

SL, you know it bro, I'm going to rehab the leg before I get into any lower body work or verticle stress taken by my leg. No point extending the injury if I can help it. I'm down 8 lbs which is disheartening, but I finally got in the gym yesterday for some light upper body work. That felt great. I appreciate all the advice you've been hooking me up with lately, it's solid. Great bro dude.

So you think I should concentrate more on the lifts themselves and less on the isolation. I think the 5x5 has my name on it then. How long should I run the program when I can start, the standard 12 weeks?

Extra M, I forgot to put in seated DB press. I was never shown how to properly do Military press and was a little nervous about it. My gym is mostly a social scene and no one does them. I've only seen two other guys dong deads. So I checked out a bunch of web sites and I think I got the form down. I just need to heal up before throwing a bunch of weight over my head. Good call though
