Stupid in America: Why your kids are probably dumber than Belgians [news item]

I don't have a problem revealing that information... Mine was well over 20k a year

As far as who's job it is , is a matter of opinion. I feel that in order to make schooling available and workable for all students then taxation and funding in the appropriate areas is in order. As long as this idea exists where schooling and hospitals should become private , what this will lead to is school and hospitals closing (lack of students/patients = lack of revenue) Only the most wealthy will be able to afford such services as high quality healthcare and private schooling are considered unavilable to many now.

What's silly is this idea that healthcare and private education are affordable now.
If you've ever had a surgery then you know what I mean. If you've had multiple surgeries they youpr probably still paying the bill...

Some education on socialist economy is definitly in order

What was your tuition?
Tuition + dorms (the first 2 years) = About $22,000 per year.

That one line always kills me.

So, you honestly believe that such services will only be directed/available to the top 2% of the population? You honestly believe that those in charge of these services will NOT want to make a profit by only making these services available to a small amount of people?

A perfect example (I forget who gave it, I think it was MTSW) refers to lasik eye surgery, which is NOT covered by your insurance. When it first came out, it was expensive as hell, and therefore nobody bought it. Those who provided it saw this, and subsequently dropped the price, so that now pretty much anybody with a 9-5 job can invest in it if they desired.

Its called supply and demand.

If everyone were a smartass then who would do all the 'dirty' work, other than blacks and mexicans? Who would be the contractors and masons?

Every country needs stupid people.

Nonetheless, better funding and research material is availabe in States and Canada, and in my opinion that is all that matters for advancement. Our colleges and universities are better(than the ones in belguim for example). People who are engaged in post secondary education have proven themselves to be smart, curious and disciplined enough to do so. Besides I strongly believe that what involves teaching a 10 year old student calculus, is highly mechanical.

By that I mean 99% of the time, kids in Belgium for example, are simply memorizing formulas and patterns, in something that involves mathematics or sciences that requires kids to think and reason instead. When these very kids reach the epitome of their educational career, they fail themselves, because their reasoning never evolved. On the other hand, a reasearcher in north america, will be far more independant and understanding in his/her field. What is really smart then? Who are sending people in space? Which system produces more innovative thinkers, leading to inventions and theories, in the edge of scientific discovery? Not the belgians, that is for sure.

So I think, that both systems have drawbacks, but both systems work best for their states.

Do you have a point? Or are you simply trying to, yet again, change the subject because you know common sense shows you are wrong?

Just trying to show you that 22k of tuition is something less then 10% of the population pays for now.
The idea that 22k / year tuition is affordable is laughable at best
That included school housing.

Why isnt it affordable? I did it with a combination of student loans and an actual work ethic. As long as you havent participated in numerous rent-to-own programs for some new rims and tires for your ride, youll be able to get a student loan.

By the by, there are obviously numerous schools (both private and state) that are cheaper than the school I went to. Its really a matter of preference...the largest class size at my school was 35 students, compared to 700 at the state school 5 miles away (which, obviously, was about $12,000 cheaper per year).
