Thanks so much. So this would mean that it makes no difference whether I take the protein before or after a work out or whatever time of day. It doesn't react to or with anythingI tried a brand called Genisoy and the vanilla tastes very good. The ultra soy protein by Genisoy talks about aiding w/estrogens (not sure what, but it can't hurt).
Should taking the proper amount of protein give me more energy?
No, it's not that I'm tired frequently. It just seems harder to workout as long and as many days as I have in the past. I'll find that I workout & do well for a few months & then I slack off & feel like I don't have the enthusiasm/strength to even get in 15 mins. I'm hoping that more protein & vitamins will give me a boost. I don't know how many calories I get right now. I'm just starting to try to figure out how to count the proteins because I've read that it's important when women get older to get enough protein before menopause. 125# sure doesn't look the way it used to on me so I'm still figuring out how to count my calories w/various online programs etc. I'm not what you'd consider a clean eater, but I really don't each much junk or fried foods. Most of the protein I get is from boca burgers (or other such products), tofu, hummis. I hardly eat dairy at all so no protein from that.
Some people I know say that vegetarians have a harder time losing weight (if they don't have a lot to lose) because they don't have enough animal protein. I don't know if that's true, but I know for myself, it takes me like two months to lose 5 #s. and the minute I stray, those #s are back in less than a week!
Sorry for the long post and I appreciate all the info & advice I've found here.
I wouldn't touch anything Soy. Its horrible for you.
My ex works in a lab and she once told me all the horrible side effects. She said she would not touch the stuff if her life depended on it.
I wish I had the list.
Thanks for the info although I am a bit worried about the long term effects I may have caused from 10 years of soy 'abuse' !! I've ordered myself some impact whey isolate as per phate1 (I would never have known otherwise) and I'll give almond milk a try. I used to drink rice milk but then realised the GI of it so I stoppedProblem is I find oats made with water so boring, even though I lace it in cinnamon so would like something to make it just a wee bit more creamy. How about Oat Milk? I have checked it out on a couple of websites and they state it's GI 30, so low.
Yeah I was just thinking about the carbs, maybe it will be a little oat overload! I will go with the Almond route I think. Anyway, thanks for your help and advice, I won't drag this post thread on any further - lesson learnt!![]()
oooh thanks, I'll take the recipe!Just had a look online and it's incredibly expensive in the UK.
+1
As you know, I agree with you on this.
I also would touch it to save my life. I learned how bad it was in nutrition school and I was horrified at how it's processed and so on. I'm lactose intolerant and had switched to soy as an alternative. I won't bore anyone with details and the side effects I had, and didn't know what it was.
And yes, dairy is just as bad. Try almond milk it taste good and it's healthier. You can make it yourself. Very easy!
Wow, thanks so much for all the info Tami and Thandie - and for the great almond milk recipe which I'm going to make right away! I knew alot of the info on cows milk after a half hearted attempt at being a vegan many, many years ago (failed miserably after two weeks because I felt so ill!) but I seriously didn't know that much about soy. I should have really though, especially after 10 years of consuming it and even more so as I am so diligent with what I consume. I guess it's because I started using soy as an alternative to dairy before I started with healthy eating and fitness so it slipped the net somehow. Isn't it disgusting though what is pumped into our foods nowadays and that we really don't know what is going on! I feel quite sad and sick after reading all of thatOn the other hand, I have also learnt that I should be soaking my quinoa before cooking for maximum enzyme release - so there have been many lessons learnt from all of this today

'Remember that soy is slower acting than Whey so it is purely a protein supplement - doesn't really act as a post workout protein.'
Hello ladies! My name is Rachael and I am new to this forum - just joined yesterday (thought it was about time!) but have been lurking in the shadows for some time now!
Sorry to ressurect an old post but I just wanted to ask a question about the above quote: I am seriously lactose intolerant and have been drinking 1 x soy protein shake as post work out for the last year or so, thinking it was having the same effect as a whey shake..... does this mean that it would be more beneficial to have maybe eggs as a pwo snack instead?
Your advice is greatly appreciated!
