The same thought went thru my head. But it's not a fair statement to make. Halle Berry was amazing in Monster's Ball. I don't think the other actresses who were nominated stretched as far as she did.
As for Denzel, I never saw Training Day, but I do think he is a damn fine actor. Russel Crowe was excellent in A Beautiful Mind, and maybe he would have won had he kissed the Academy's ass....So it would be a more accurate statement to say that Denzel won because he was more cordial/more of a kiss ass than Russell Crowe rather than because of the color of his skin.
The Academy Awards last night do not reflect affirmative action. Affirmative Action requires that a certain percentage of African-Americans or other minorities receive a particular number of jobs, academic positions, etc. There is no requirement that African-Americans win an Oscar. Instead, thousands of members of the Academy on their own volition, own free will, checked:
---Ms. Berry
---Mr. Washington
over the competition. That's about as democratic as you can get.
A wise, just result, one that is long overdue. When Oprah Winfrey did not receive an Oscar for Color Purple we saw the Academy lurking its racist head. Years later, we see the Academy basking in the light.....
