Dumb people are always the ones who yell, "Oh, but look at that scientist. He's not as STREET SMART as me!" This always cracks me up. ;-)calveless wonder said:Let me tell you why i think this thread is gonna suck (not the idea layingback.. but the feedback/posts)
First of all, i don't think alot of people understand the true definition of "smart". Intelligence is a variety of things and factors into everything from social skills/human interaction, problem solving, reason, learn from mistakes and the ability to process information.
Yeah you can be book smart...a math or science whiz, but does that make you a genius? No. The most intelligent and successful people i know or have ever met have capabilities beyond just one portion of knowledge or area.
Knowledge in itself is a portion of being intelligent, but is far from the end all. You know how many math geniuses or engineers can't talk to stranger without dying of anxiety?
Secondly, i already noticed a large age bias. most of the people mentioned are 35+...(no disrespect to them of course)
I think often people equate age with intelligence. It's just not true. Yes, one may become smarter from life experiences assuming they have been in many different situations and environments. Layinback is a perfect example of that...someone who's been through several lifetimes of experience yet has very little formal education. Obviously in his case (like myself) he makes it a habit to gain knowledge on his own which is why he's so well spoken and articulate. However, that is not everybody.
You're smart relative to where you are in life. that's why i mentioned some of the younger peeps on this forum. i bet you're gonna see alot of people not mentioned because of that.
just a rant, really

I love people who always bust out the "street smarts" argument. My dad does the same thing. I love him to death, but he is way too insecure about not being college educated. So, he always points out that he has "street smarts" and insults college educated people for not possessing his "street smarts." It makes me chuckle a bit, because he lives in a small town subdivision -- not exactly the mean streets which would garner the hard knocks that would develope "street smarts."

Education, whether formal or self taught, is paramount. But you don't have to go to college to be educated. At the same time you can have all the knowledge in the world but if you can't apply it it means absolutely nothing. You can have a GREAT work ethic and read book after book but does that make you smart? no, it makes you knowledgable. that's it
People confuse knowledge with being smart. the two are not mutually exclusive

contrary to what the ivory tower college instructors who spend their entire "career" hiding out in academia will preach to you....velvett said:I think we can all agree that "street smarts" or "book smarts" are not a guarantee of success in life or business.
I honestly believe that the most important factor to success is being focused on one thing and having a dogged degree of perseverance.velvett said:Street smarts is really more about manipulation, survival and common sense but you do don't need street smarts or a high level of intelligence to have common sense and one doesn't always dictate the other.
I agree with you about the argument because a lot people that claim to be street smart (only) don't realize that you can be college educated and street smart as well but that would be like admitting they're not the smartest and most educated.
It's the people that are way off in one direction or another that anyone really takes notices of (and those that wear it on their sleeve as some sort of badge of honor).
I think we can all agree that "street smarts" or "book smarts" are not a guarantee of success in life or business.

But they are all multi millionaires. Heather might giggle at the people yelling "street smarts" in defense of their lack of education, but I laugh at people who turn their nose up at the intelligence of someone who hasn't completed college (not saying that's you, heather, but there are plenty out there who feel that way).
College is an acheivement, a way of showing people that you went through a proccess and completed some formalized education. But having a degree does not in any way shape or form mean one is smarter than someone without one. That may be the case in some or many situations, but getting a degree is not the measuring tool.
(Coming from someone who spent six years in college between undergrad and grad)
Interesting theory. I agree that the happiness part seems a value that is placed on that sort of life. Many, many highly intelligent people seem to be the ones with the most inner turmoil, it seems to me.stilleto said:I have this very interesting book on intelligence (my father studied it for years). It claims that two things factor into intelligence; creativity and happiness.
Creativity is because a creative mind can problem solve on different levels. By keeping an open mind and being able to think outside of the box, solutions (whether to life situations, or 'street smart' or to academia) to problems at hand will be greater in number and therefore choosing the best answer will be easier.
The other arguement to intelligence is the ability to be happy. I don't necessarily agree with this, but the book claims that those that live happily are the most intelligent- although i think that's a philisophical matter.
heatherrae said:Interesting theory. I agree that the happiness part seems a value that is placed on that sort of life. Many, many highly intelligent people seem to be the ones with the most inner turmoil, it seems to me.
Creativity, I'm sure, definitely factors into the equation.

yes. seems pretty clear to me that this was the point.stilleto said:I understand heather's point- maybe she didn't word it well.
from what I read, she's not saying that anyone who uses the "street smart" phrase is an idiot, but rather there are idiots OUT THERE (not necessarily in HERE) who use it as an excuse for THEIR stupidity.
i think most of us can agree that there are people who do that- I know i've seen it- people who aren't educated, successful, or happy and they say "yeah, but I'm street smart". She was perhaps making a point that there are a lot of people who do that.
She even gave her own father as an example. And clearly she doesnt think her father is an idiot. In fact, she stated that she thinks he's quite smart. I think she was merely pointing out how some people try to mask their own insecurities in using the "street smart" line. And i think she's right, some people do that. agreed.FriendlyCanadian said:I think it's indicative of success, because it's one of the ways to truely become successful.
To me the success is once you've achieved the upper echelons of your dreams and desires and manifested them into a reality, and not before then would I consider you to be a success.
perhaps I didn't explain myself as clearly as I could have.
I meant the people who continue on the path of thier dreams and desires and continue to have the complete faith that thier dreams will one day be manifested into a reality, and are also taking action in achieving those dreams are successful.
no matter how much knowledge you posses, social skillz, leet math skillz, or even street smarts, to me I could not consider someone of superior intelligence if they have let society crush thier dreams and have followed down a path of complaceny for whatever reason, most likely taking the safe route or having lost faith in themselves and thier dreams.
I agree though it is partially talking about successful, but again it was "my" opinion of superior intelligence, the people who continue to strive for thier dreams no matter how outlandish they may seem with that burning desire, and complete and utter faith they thay will one day succeed.

I've also observed that the higher levels of education a person achieves the more they discount the value of the opinions of people who didn't acquire that level of education, you start encountering more and more academic snobbery.
Be that it may, it's my personal observation that the general overall intellectual "fluidity" of America is becoming increasing stagnant. By that I mean that natural selection has been eliminated, no longer weeding out the inferior intellect (which used to die of mishap, generally through their own stupidity) and they are, in fact, breeding in higher numbers than the supposed "better minds." Meanwhile, we increasingly reward minds that are very good at retaining an awful lot of information about a comparatively narrow field. We reward people who are good at learning information in a certain prescribed manner but not the ones that think "outside the box." We do not acknowledge creative use of intellect within the public educational system, and the student who may be quite bright but doesn't necessarily have a good rote memory or isn't mathematically strong is often overlooked and rarely encouraged.
I'd be very interested to see what the society is going to be like in another say 500 years.
