Shoulder surgery in 4 weeks

Well, 20 + years of heavy lifting, over 200 lbf curls, 400 pound benches, 300 pound military presses, etc and my right shoulder finally has had enough.

The cartalidge needs to be reattached in the rear to the bone, the front cartalidge needs to be cleaned up, and the ligaments and tendons get a hair dryer treatment to shrink them and tighten them.

All done orthoscopically. Should take about 6 weeks to full use and 3-6 months for unrestricted lifting again. I am gonna go nuts till I can lift. Guess I'll just work on legs and abs!

This makes #4 surgery. Wish I would have had a mentor when I was young and started lifting. Might have avoided all of this. Maybe not, but probably. Helps not having to learn how to lift on your own.

Thats a rough situation bud! I'd go crazy not lifting for that long. Get your rest and have a fast recovery so you can get your ass back in the gym. Good luck!

what is the hair dryer treatment? The cartiledge debris is a symptom of a lose sloppy joint, fix that and the rest thould heal on its own if allowed, this can all be done without surgery.

I feel for ya bro, I would hate to be laid up that long. Like you said, you should work the fuck out of your abs and legs.

My buddy had rotator cuff surgery 5 months ago. He's just now getting to overhead presses with 25kgs. He does work his legs though, so he isn't wasting away. Good luck and listen to your physical therapist and go slow.

I wish you a speedy recovery. I hurt my shoulder last week and now have to go and get it checked. Hopefully it can be healed through therapy.:)

Im sure it can be healed by therapy, especially if its prolotherapy :)

I feel you bro. Had shoulder surgery myself 2 years ago. I'm an old-timer like you. Here's to wishing you a speedy recovery.

I had orthoscopic shoulder surgery 5 weeks ago, and still don't have my full range of motion back, and can barely lift my hand. A guy at the gym had the same surgery, but started on gear right away, and was lifting 100% of his pre-surgery weight just 6 weeks after surgery. I just started a short light cycle, hoping to help the muscle repair. I'm going crazy not being able to lift!

Physio bro ... lots of it when its over, and maybe thereputic message too. I was laid up for about 5 months before from a disclocated shoulder and broken arm. No fun. It will never be the same ever again as far as range of motion goes ... but its pretty close, and I am happy with progress I have made. You end up doing a lot of compensating with other muscles, especially in your back, when your shoulder is not 100%, wait and you will see.

Anyways, you will be better before you know it. Use the time to try to get your bf as low as possible, that is what I did, lots of cardio, heavy leg days, and abs of course. Also, concentrate on some of the things that you may have not spent enough time on before when you were training full time ... whether its friends, family, work, hobbies etc. This is a good time to put some extra attention in to them. Good luck bro, stay strong.

Sounds like the rest is needed

anyone have any good shoulder injury links? Im trying to figure out what my shoulder problem even is. It feels like its in the front/upper shoulder, right about where your upper pec/shoulder/and upper bicep "meet". Hurts to bench, although inclines arent as bad as flat, and dips hurt, and of course punching hurts (Im a boxer damitt). Anyone have this exact feeling? What was it? Any help MUCH appreciated, w/ karma on top. peace

btw zyglamail, what exactly is prolotherapy. How would that rate against some ART??

Most of our injuries are due to tendon/ligament strains and sprains. These tissues normally replace themselves at a rate of once every 300-500 days, thats a year to year and a half. At that turnover rate you can see why an injury of this type takes so long to heal. What further exacerbates these injuries is that the key ingredient in healing is inflamation, it triggers a whole cascade of healing events and GREATLY increases the turnover rate of these tissues but is painfull. Since so many people veiw inflamation and associated pain as the enemy they load up on anti-inflamatories, reduce or eliminate inflamation and then the injured tissue is once again back on the slow track to tissue turnover rate of once every 300-500 days. While waiting, you continue to suffer pain and continue to live and lift in an injured state, loading up on anti-inflamatories and continue to eliminate healing all in the name of comfort.

As time goes by the joints these tendons/ligaments support and hold together become sloppy and often times it wears away at cartiledge causing a further buildup of debris. Then before ya know it some doc convinces you to go under the knife so he can "clean it up". However the scaring and debris is simply a side effect of the lose joint, it IS NOT the problem and until the problem is addressed you will continue to suffer. SUrgery can only reattach a completely severed tendon/ligament, it CAN NOT strengthen/shorten and in turn restabalize the joint.

ART is great for minor injuries, it helps to promote blood flow and hence speed recovery. However, many ART practitioners recomend patience use ice and anti-inflamatories, these do the exact opposite of what ART is trying to accomplish.

Prolotherapy is a procedure that uses an inflamatory agent (dextrose, muhrate etc) that is injected directly into the injured tendons/ligaments, this causes a very localized, immediate and intense inflamatory reaction and in turn massive healing (assuming you avoide ice and anti-inflamatories which would defeat the whole process). I have had prolo done on both elbows (i couldnt curl 20ls it hurt so bad), both shoulders, my back and my foot ankle with awesome results. I took a couple days after each treatment off from lifting but aside from that it didnt interfere with my training at all. you can read more about injuries and how prolo helps at prolonews.com
