Well I understand it all too, right there with ya, since "Dr. Phil" was giving me the same lecture as well
But I've also gotten it my whole life... or people saying "smile, lifes not that bad BLAH" I'll smile when I have something to smile about

It's usually right before I'm getting ready to head out to the weights or right after when I'm taking my head phones off. I usually give off the don't f--- with me look and I still get it. I don't mind if people ask me a specific question for help about an exercise but the rest is un-called for!! I try not to make eye contact, no smile, head phones, sometimes hat... I still get it... 
(said as a totally straight female, of course)
