Chicago is beautiful seriously stunning and so extravagantly decorated for the holidays. The malls and shops were all packed wall to wall people almost a little over whelming at times.

Americans seem to have no fear about wearing fur in public I saw at least a dozen women out in furs. My mom has a beautiful fur she hasn’t worn it in 15 years because it is just so not PC here.

How does a 16-17 year old afford a coach or chanel purse? I can’t even justify dropping $300+ on one how do the parents justify it? Speaking of the parents I want to slap them for spoiling them like that seriously. Only time my Mom ever dropped a ridiculous amount of money on me was for my prom dress and all that went with it.

Americans don’t know how to say excuse me or pardon me and never apologies when bumping into you.

My work holiday party was PHAT something like 8000 people unreal.

Deep dish pizza :p :p :p

Don't judge all of us by observing Yankees.

Most places down South we are polite, friendly and courteous. Heck around where my parents live people wave to each other when passing by while driving.

Yeah I have been in the south a lot and do notice they are much more polite. I was just shocked I live in a big city and dam people aren't that rude here. Oh and I thought our taxi drivers were crazy :worried: OMG I am lucky to live through the cab rides :worried: Also pedestrians don’t get the right of way in Chicago ever :worried:

Yeah but it is the holidays were is peoples spirit of giving and stuff?

Oh also saw a whole lot of cops out and about mmmm men in uniforms :p

It's interesting to note how people see different cultures. For all the crap I always heard about NYC being filled with rude people, it's actually quite the opposite. It's a very small area with an enormous amount of people in it - nobody would be able to survive if they were rude all the time. This type of atmosphere actually forces people to co-exist in ways that southern hicks like aap will never know, cause his closest neighbor is a 20 minute donkey ride away. If I only had to deal with human contact every 3 days and wouldn't have to compete over natural resources EVERY DAY, then I would be walking around whistlin dixie all the time too.

Anyway, I don't judge people's rudeness (or lack of) by whether or not they apologize when we bump into each other - that's just part of living in a big city and walking around during the most high traffic, high stress time of the year.

You forgot to add. American's never say "you're welcome" when you say "thank you" They say "UH HUH"! weird!
I deal with American suppliers daily and not one says "you're welcome"!
Philly is a great city like Chicago.

Everyone's definition of manners is different, so nobody is right or wrong.

I think that depends on the American. (I've held many a door open to no receive a thank you and depending on my mood - I'll just "YOU'RE WELCOME" and keep walking.

That said, I did notice in past travels that Canadians were very friendly, especially on the East Coast.

good post, killahbread.

lots of mannered, civilized, kind people here. i usually spit on 'em and kick them to the wall, but still. they exist.

EH?

I'm a "yankee" and we wave to each other, some of us even talk *gasp* to each other and help fix flat tires.

We're just not fake - if someone doesn't like you - you'll know about it.

And you wonder why I can't wait to leave? Those are just *teeny* things that annoy me about many Americans. And I dare say MOST...

Imagine you are the one trying to raise your children up *the right way* and they are bombarded on a daily basis with swarms of litle friends whose parents dont have a clue how to teach their children self-discipline, responsibility, self-respect, delayed gratification or how to appreciate anyTHING let alone anyONE.

I am officially donating a "One Free Sexing From UncleSlat" card to QT to get her back to men!
It has no expiration date and you can use it as many times as you want!

oh sorry, I guess there is a universal definition that crosses ALL cultures, races and ethnicities.

please enlighten us on that one, tiger.

There are, of course, many differences. However, we're not talking about China and Kazakhstan here. Saying excuse me when you bump into someone for example would qualify as a level of politeness, no?

LOL

If by unfriendly you mean "sarcastic" you would be right.

A good friend of mine is from the south - she had a lot to say about the culture differences.

*SNARF*

"Bumping into someone" by QT's definition may very well be SOP for people living in major American cities. Therefore, it's not looked upon as a disrespectful act here, but merely the cost of doing business in massively overcrowded areas.

If I get "bumped into" 10 times on the streets of NYC, at least 7 of those times I get an apology or something similar.

dont shit on the Yankees, man. They can be polite. When I first came in Michigan, I was the one who was the worst - talking to people with attitude, bumping into people not saying Scuse me, cuz they were in my way, they need to move for me to pass etc. Trust me, you havent seen rude people untill you go to the Balkan

Typical balkanic behaviour. I know , cause I lived there for a while.

I've been told that it is FAR WORSE in India.

I havent heard anything about India.

All I know is that while I was still back home, I was vain and rude and I didnt care. People needed to get the fuck out of my way; waiting in line to buy something - what is that? When I came here and browsed the stores with my husband he was constantly telling me how rude I was, even the tone of my voice was more in the manner - you are not worthy talking to me

This is the same behavior/attitude I was told was prevalent in India.

Come to think of it... this is the way that my mother has ALWAYS behaved but not my father. They are both Hungarian. I wonder if it is a "female" thing. Meaning, the women are socialized to behave this way. To this day, my mother's rudeness and self-centered behavior makes neither my sister nor I want to spend much time with her.

Your thoughts?

its not only females doing this. Its everybody. If you are not like that, you dont get anywhere.
When I went back home after "being rehabilitated" here :lmao: I was shocked at everyones rudeness - male AND female. Everything that I used to do was being done to me and I didnt like it. Once I snapped at 2 teenage boys - I was getting food and waiting for change, these 2 kids behind me just started pushing me towards (and I was preggo at this time) and swinging their arms placing their order. I turned back and yelled at them, but later got yelled from my mom for making a scene. I had to bring the bitch back out to survive :lmao:

Thats just the attitude of most in the Chicagoland. Most people won't even say hi after they look dead at you. Sometimes I smile, nod and say fck you politely to see if they are paying attentio. They usually don't though.
