Question over social networking...

I've got a mini research project due in November for my Social Systems class, and I'm forming an abstract around exponential growth in social networking and how it effects our culture.

My question is for peeps who belong to My Space, Twitter, FaceBook, Friendster, Imeeb, or any other of the big ones...

Do you know the peeps as well as you know people around here?

How is the communication better or worse?
This is a naive question, no doubt.
However if anyone wants to indulge me, I would be grateful.

Ariel, I would love to help but I don't belong to any of those forums. I'm here and on another fitness forum, that's about it.

I mean the more like data I came up with, just the more overwhelmed I felt, like how can people just keep track of all those connections and invest anything in them?
These questions aren't me judging, it just seems so much info, and not enough attention pervades all aspect of our lives...

I'm on Facebook and Myspace. I stopped using FB ever since it opened up to non-university students. That exclusivity and lack of spam was the reason I used it.

For both MS and FB, I would only befriend people I knew in person, or, later, people I knew from EF. That's it. I reject any other friend invites.

I never used either for communication. Only for having my public and contact info out there in case someone wanted to find me.

Myspace is for long lost friends from Texas to find me. I have EF friends there too. Don't use it much at all.

Facebook is the type of site that if I'm at my gf's house and my kid leaves a toy there I log on and "write on her wall" to let her know. I love Facebook. My neighbor and I will see each other outside and a few minuets later will be continuing the conversation on facebook. I chat with my DH and his collegues on there too. Myspace...NO!

I do not have a SINGLE EF buddy on Facebook but honestly, it's best to keep my EF friends on Myspace because like president Clinton, I like to keep my life "compartmentalized".

Sometimes I feel kinda bad about compartementilization but it does work. My social circles have to stay seperate in some ways. I don't really like my e-life colliding with my in "in person" life.

My ultimate dream is to have them be the same without worry but for now they don't always mix. I suspect that many people are the same way if they are honest.

Yo, i'm a pretty big facebook whore. Almost all my friends are people i know IRL, which opposite the case of EF. EF is used for having discussions, while facebook is used for keeping in touch. You can share photos and tag your friends, and also just write whatever you feel like on someone's wall. Facebook is also really good for inviting people to events; pretty much every party my friends throw is made into a facebook event so that it is easy to invite people and provide pertinent information.

As for the hookup thing, facebook is really useful for a situation where you meet someone you hit it off with, but for whatever reason you didn't leave with their contact info. Then you can search their name and add them, and shoot public or private messages back and forth - hopefully resulting in a future meat-up. EF i dunno about, i've never tried to creep any EF women.
