Dear Brothers and Sisters of EF:
I would like to extend my thanks to George Spellwin for providing a first-rate site, great content, and extras such as free EF Stealth Mail.
Also to those fine Mods who keep things in check. You know me and I know who you are.
And to the members who make this board through their selfless contributions.
My best wishes for a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, enjoyable holiday season, and accomplishment and success in whatever you do in the coming year.
I posted this on http://www.steroidworld.com and http://www.whazsupp.com and a couple of other boards where I mod or hang out. But with respect to EF, where I got my start several years ago, I'd like to post this.
Christmas in Egypt.
Deployment in the sand. Special mess tent flown in and set up. My special ops team having gone through the chow line. Me the last (and never sitting at the "officers table" [except to politick], but with my folks, always).
Biggest, Blackest Guy I'd Ever Seen.
"Hey, 'tenant, Merry Christmas!"
"Thanks, master chef. Same to you!"
"Lieutenant, you gotta try these yams. Made 'em myself. ummmm, sump'chus stuff. Used my own recipe."
(I'm thinking, "I hate yams.")
But... "Hey, Chef, load me up, and I'll take an extra portion if you have one, since you made it."
"'Tenant, you got it. I made plenty. As Ahntie always says, 'Don't nobody go hungry at Christmas time.'"
Freaking great yams.
I went to thank the cooks, and at the request of Airman Staub, went with him in the back. Staub literally in tears, obviously homesick, thanking the cooks for the best Christmas he could have hoped for.
Had a beer with them. They were exhausted.
But they were damned proud.
We all read the standard teletype message from the Secretary of Defense (yawn). Big deal. Why can't these guys put a little of passion into their Merry Christmas messages to servicemen and women?
The chef retired as a Master Sergeant and is now chief cook at an established restaurant outside of Atlanta. I hope to have the opportunity to visit there one day.
Pride, folks. In whatever you do. Accomplishment.
To those on this fine board who are away from their loved ones this holiday period or on active duty or protecting and serving while others enjoy Christmas with their loved ones, a special thanks to you.
Warm regards to all,
Dexter
