Powerlifting carry over to fighting

I know a few of you lift/powerlift, and also take up fighting as part of your life as well. Wether it be kickboxing, streetfighting, or wrestling, that doens't matter. What I'm asking is, is there a specific way you carry over your strength and speed to fighting? I know you as you become stronger in your lifts, and recruit more force, that you will punch/kick harder faster as well, but its not a 100% carry over, so do you guys do anything inparticular to make this carry over as high as possible? I think i said that clearly enough :) Thanks
 
;) good point and ofcourse ive taken that into consideration. But u know what im talking about, like how a JM press would have a better carry over to your bench then like..kickbacks ;)...
 
I don't really know for sure, but instinctively, I think it would help a lot if you did an explosive, bodyweight-only movement after a compund lift. For example, If you do a set of heavy squats/leg presses, right after that movement, you might superset deep squat-jumps without any weight with the compund movement. Or after a set of benches/dips, maybe superset that with some clap-pushups.

Personally, I haven't tried that, but I think that might help carry the strength over into your fighting explosiveness, and if not, maybe try periodization. You know, split your routine into different phases, such as hypertrophy, strength/power, conversion of strength/power into your specific discipline, peaking, active rest, then repeat. Each phase should last for maybe 4 weeks, but feel free to change the time factor according to your progress in each phase.

My training partner is a black belt in tai-kwan-do, squats over 800 lbs., and has deadlifted 790. He could kick pretty much anyone's ass.

According to him, powerlifting improved his fighting ability. He was quick before, but now he's quick and powerful.
 
I played with a guy in college who was a third degree blackbelt in ninjitsu... saw him break 5 stacked concrete slabs about 3-4 inches thick with one blow...

He sucked at football... and lifting.... but he would kick your ass all over the place... I don't think there is any carryover really, though I am sure it could not hurt...

That said- one of the best brawlers I have known, italian kid from NYC, about 6-2 220, never lifted... only pushups, chins/pullups and ran... saw the kid beat up HUGE top level athlete dudes with ease...

Powerlifting will definately help your fighting. As far as carryover certainty, simply avoid being a bodybuilder. Abs, bicep peaks, etc are all blasphemy. Other than that, like slobber said...powerlifting will add 'powerful' to your arsenal, and that's pretty damn valuable.

hello stranger :)

cleans, jerks and snatch's have helped me....i do them from the hang for speed, and do heavy compund lifts for strength
