PL Equipment

Alright id like to start acquiring some pl gear so i can learn the groove of the equipment plus id like to do a meet in 6 months and id like to be comfortable in the gear..ive pretty much decided im going with Metal all the way..Money is a little tight right now but id like to get 2 of the 4 items on this list:

Metal viking pro bencher
metal pro briefs
metal pro squatter
metal pro deadlifter

im thinking i definitely need the shirt (since its the hardest to learn) after that im not sure should i get the squat suit or the briefs first? my guess is i should get the briefs first..opinions???

definately the shirt and... probably briefs. you can squat or deadlift in them and wear them under a singlet if you compete.
i mean WHEN you compete.

the dealift suit i know will definitely be the last thing i buy..i would try to dead in the squat suit but ive heard many say its too difficult to get to the bar in the suit..knew you would say the shirt though :)

I'd go with the shirt and the squat suit. You may not like squatting in briefs and a suit, plus some associations don't allow the use of both. The squat suit can help with deads as it provides more back support/compression than briefs.

thats what I would get for myself, cause i HATE briefs- i like having straps, but beast has used briefs before.
you're thought might be better though.

thnks scots..i would most likely lift APF or IPA they allow double ply suits along with double ply briefs/shirts..

i use a single ply pair of briefs now but they are rather big so id like to step up and try a thicker set of briefs as well as tighter..

im actually very tempted to get the shirt briefs and squat suit now lol just dont think i can afford it all right now :)

I'd still say get the suit first and get used to it before you add briefs to it. That way when you are used to the suit you will have more money saved to buy the briefs with. Win-Win situation.

i love my metal pro briefs.

if i was in your position, i would order the shirt and probably the squat suit. (you have a pair of briefs and can use them). upgrade later, maximize what you have now

why a metal shirt? just curious

ive talked with a few that have a metal shirt and they love it..also its a closed neck but it can be cut later on and pulled lower on the shoulders and become a true open back..i was told you cant cut the karins closed neck shirt

Hence wntbBeast's Avatar - he's all about the 'Metal'. No, but seriously - I talked to Jim W. at EliteFTS and said I like Metal and an open back shirt. He said no problem. I wonder if that means I can get Metal in open back or if alterations will be required? Hmmm. I guess I'll find out Sunday.

I would definately say the Shirt, of course and the Metal briefs are 'serious' - so for the money, i think you will be really pleased with just the two to start with.

the metal shirts that are open backed all have closed necks so if you want a totally open back itll have to be altered..ill tell ya i have metal knee wraps and wrist wraps and they are some of the tightest wraps i have ever used..i can only imagine what a double ply suit or shirt feels like lol..

I bought the EFS metal manual it was worth the info..its gives a little better description of the gear from whats on the web site..they suggest using Ginny Philips [email protected] for alterations,,but im sure Wendler would have told you that :)

I think it's more dependant on what type of squatter / deadlifter you are. The pro squatter, you can use it to dead with if you pull sumo. I just got the Viking V-Type squatter and will use it for both.

I've seen guys use the Pro Metal stuff and have to turn their belts backwards and take a huge breath just to get to the bar.

Again, depends on what your style is and what kinda fit you get on the suit!

Used an open back Metal Viking Pro Bencher this past weekend at EFS. It was a double ply and a size too big for me.

I've never hardly used a shirt before, I'm 205 and pure as the driven snow. I was able to three board 475 and just missed 500. Go with this shirt, it is no joke :)

Was able to put it on and take it off mostly by myself and had someone help me jack it up.

never pulled sumo..
my squat stance is typical WSB very wide med bar positon, i liek to try to squat more up and down rather then get bent over too much but shit happens lol

how do you like the viking v-type?

thats good news about the shirt... im ordering mine pretty soon...ive been pure for almost ayear lol but i would prolly lift in the APF this way if the urge ever hits me i dont have to wrry about testing :)

Both my partner and I got the V-Type Viking and started with Arched Back Good Mornings last night. We both had ~20 pound PR's, I hit 445 x 3 for my last set and were still a bit beat up from the day before.

These are single ply suits, if or when you order, make sure you call and talk with someone. Look at going by the breif size chart, it is more suited towards actual hip measurements. My suit is tight as shit, with the straps down, and now i think i should have gotten a size smaller. My idea was to work into the suit with Good Mornings, then high box squats or something and then low box or free squats with a manta ray.

I'll tell you, this friggin suit stopped me at 90 degrees doing my good mornings at 315 and wouldn't budge anywhere thereafter. I can't imagine what a double ply will do for you if you have any raw strength to begin with.

metal gear is pretty good, the v type suit is as good as any poly out there, maybe the boss is a bit better but they are close, both really good. def go with the pro bencher, i had the ipf legal one and it is good but not as good as the rage or titan f-6, my train part has the pro bencher and he likes it a lot. I agree with the guy who said get the suit first, then add briefs, it is going to take a ton of weight to get you below parallel with both. what kind of numbers do you put up in the squat?

ive got a 535 box squat thats in a belt and very loose briefs (single ply) gonna try to break that on monday and try some free squatting for a week or two and take a weight

have you ordered you suit, shirt yet?, i would use the briefs you have now for training and try the suit without them to start, then add the metal briefs later, cant say how much for sure, but with both the metal suit, and metal briefs it is going to take at least the 535 to get you down, and you don't want to open anywhere near that, especially for your first meet. i use a titan dual quad, and it takes 455 to get to parallel with the straps down, 500 to get there with straps up, and near 6 to get down in briefs and the suit. so if you have breifs now to train in, the new ones need not be a priority.

well im expecting to hit 585-600 raw..
i do my box squats very strict like the WSB guys.. sit and pause not touch and go with a rocking motion BS..

i havent ordered anything yet
but the shirt is a definite and it seems everyone is in agreement to go with the sui and get the briefs later :)

that is a good squat, you can use the briefs and suit if your hitting that raw, you should be around 800 with both, with a 600 raw squat. i hope all your new gear works out for you and you put up some big numbers. now all you gotta do is get to a meet. there are plenty of ipa and afp meets near you, do you have one in mind?

If your doing a meet in Feb, I would get your equipment soon. Too often I see people buy all of this gear and never train in it to break it in or figure it out for that matter.

Like those Metal suits, I'm wearing mine regularly to slowly break it in and see how bad it's going to eat me up when I hit depth.

Just a thought.

i agree with what you said..im not planning on a eet for at least 6 months..im going to watch one end of feb..

just wanna get the equipment now to do like you said break it in and feel comfortable and know how i react in it

good idea, they will throw you off if your not used to them, i used to always have a problem with my squat suit throwing me forward, I learned the straps were too tight, when i had them let out it fixed this prob, plus the squat just feels different in a suit, you need to use it a lot! and it takes some time to learn to get down to the bar to deadllift with a suit on. as far as it eating you up, i assume your talking about the pain? don't worry after a while you will not even notice it, exept for the nice marks it leaves on you.
