Check this one out... this was the 2nd night there.. made for a GOOD morning the next day:

I wouldn't mind going to Bolder for school.

I've rarely been outside the WI/IL/IN area, though. All I know is that I hate hot weather.

:cow:

here I am at the condo I stayed in.. homie from high school on the right.. two lawyers from work on the left:

lol.. they were totally cool man.. down to hang out and party... one on the far left is 50+ and single.. surfer/san diego style... its fun arguing with these guys too, its what they do for a living.

looks exciting.
its kind of a back country style place..

very few snowboarders

average age was probably in the 40s

the night life is good for that reason really, there are 3-4 bars that are packed with everyone 35 and under

I love Colorado! I grew up there for the most part, other than my last teo years of HS and where I was born. I'll be there in April just before I head down to Louisiana. Hopefully gonna be able to go have a keg or two with Scotsman.

Beefcake28 posted something on a thread about physics, and I found out he went to CU. I did a bit of research into their physics program and saw that it was totally what I was looking for... so CU's at the top of my list for schools to apply to. I'm just not sure how competitive they are, being that they have NIST and some other prestigious labs there. I'd totally be down for haning out!

i had a roomy who worked at NIST, he had his PhD from CalTech and coudnt get
a interview to work @ CU.
they have a couple Nobel Prize physics peeps there

I always disregarded CU as somewhere I'd want to go to purely because I thought it was bloody hot there. I've been told that Boulder is similar to Milwaukee area, so that's okay.

I've permanixed every school in CA and FL, I just abhor hot weather. I'm the type who'd be happy in Norway or Alaska, lol.

:worried:

Rankings-wise, CIT, MIT, Stanford, et al. are always topping the lists. It's hard to find admissions stats for grad school apps, and they can be totally different from undergrad. E.g. UMaryland is a TTT UG, but a prestigious T10 grad school. I'm gonna have to look further into 'em when I do more research.

I wear t-shirts when it's 50F out, lol.

i gotta run samote, but i watched the first two hours of the string theory DVD.

interesting, but since it is untestable, I tend to agree that it is more of a philosophy then a science... the extra dimensions, the size and shape of the strings, etc.. seems completely made up, BUT at the same time I can see how it could make sense.

I'd be interested to see how research progresses with it.

Unfortunetly, theoretical physics is so far ahead of experimental physics that we will likely never be able to test this stuff. It's all based in extremely complex mathematics that's out of most peoples' league, even PhD math and physics people. And no testing/verifying = no funding, so it's gonna get pretty stuck for a long time.

bummer.. i guess we'll never know..

or maybe there will be an einstein of theoretical physics that will come along?

Looks like a good time Lestat, it has been snowing here the last 3 days, I am looking to head to snowmass if I don't have to work next week. next time let me know when you will be in Colorado. I am sure I will still be playing in the mud here for a long time with all the wells they have planned..

I'll be there from April 1-7. Gonna have some beers with Scotsman if he's in town. You welcome to show up and drown a couple.

Hell's yeah CU physics is great, I did a bit of time in there doing my geology degree. If you come out here we have to get a beer and listen to some metal.

Boulder has cold winters and perfect summers.

California has mild summers if you can stay close to the coast. It is always 70 degrees in San Diego it seems. Hence the outrageous home prices. The climate rocks.

When I lived in the dorms at CU I'd keep my room at 35-40 degrees during the winter. I wear shorts until about 10degrees or so. Zero is where I break out a coat instead of a sweatshirt, so I feel you pain on the heat issue.

Cheers,

Damn straight! There's so many schools out there that most people go by rankings and similarsuch. CU's always been second tier and never on the grad rankings for anything, so it (and schools like it) are easily overlooked without info from people that actually know the school. I'd definitely like to go there.

Seventy degrees, to me, is hot. Wisconsin summers are uncomfortably hot to me as well, lol. I don't know... I've always just had a thing for cold weather.

Yeah CU gets overlooked on a lot of stuff for some reason. The physics department has two nobel lauriats right now and are always up for big awards. When I started there CU was the #1 classical geology school in the world, the architecture department outranks harvard, etc..

At least there's someone who can relate! When I was competing and hit 225-230 in the offseason, I was sweating while walking through snow to class. I'm not as bad staying around 195, but I still don't put a leather coat on unless there's a frostbite advisory out or something, lol.

BTW, NPC makes superb jackets and coats that fit perfectly.

Already checked their school out. Great for geology and stuff relating to their location, but nothing in any area I would be interested in.

I wouldn't mind a place like U Oslo, but I would be apprehensive going somewhere without being fluent in their language.

What do you think of the Colorado School of Mines? That is a great school in the mountains.

I HATED summers in Wisconsin.... The AC was on 24/7.

For Colorado, think Wisconsin temperatures - humidity. 90 degrees feels like 70 because any sweat evaporates almost instantly. Going from living in Wisconsin all my life, with its 90+% humidity to Colorado's ~20-30% humidity felt like a dream come true.... Winters can get cold, but not the bitter, damp cold like in Wisconsin. Usually it is around 30-50 degrees almost all winter, with the occasional week getting up to 60's or sometimes down in the teens. Still, no humidity, and that's what makes it so damn nice!! :)

Funny, living here all my life I'm counting the days until its warm again.

CU in Boulder has a lot of hot liberal babes too although that isn't the wisest criteria to use for picking a school... but if you do ... the poon is a plenty
