One reason to not do squats? Height?

I'm gonna get crucified here, but everyone I know that does heavy squats
while taking gear had their spine compress at a faster than normal rate. In
normal individuals, the spine compresses slowly after the age of 50, and losing
.5 to 1 inch of height per decade because of this at old age is common. But everyone
I know that has done gear while squatting had this condition accelerated -
and they have all lost a bit of height since squatting while using steroids. I know of two guys that have lost an inch of height, and many more that have lost a bit less.

I'm a little over 6'1" right now and I like being tall......i'm not afraid of doing
squats and puking aftewards, but there are so many good implications of
being taller than average (especially w/ girls) and I don't want to compromise that!

Anyone else notice the same thing?

You have to be using a ton of weight to accelerate the compression; twice your bodyweight and up.

Most of the guys I know don't use "superheavy" weight, just a lot of reps. They're not powerlifters by any means.

Like you said though... it's when you get in your 40's and 50's or whatever do you shrink. By that time who the fuck cares? If you aren't married already then you're pretty much screwed.

Maybe you should read what I posted, AGAIN

I actually notice squats doing to opposite - helping me stand "taller". I'm in my early 30's. I notice that working/making my leg/back muscles stronger I stand straighter and look taller.

the price to pay for having thick strong quads..i think ive lost an inch but perosnally i lift for the sake of moving iron not for girls..ive seen plenty of fat dudes with good looking chicks and not those skinny ass model type girls either!!

There's a price for everything bro! Losing a little hight ain't no big deal! Besides most chics wouldn't notice you're 6' 1/2" instead of 6'1".

I have been doing heavy squats for years (500# +) and I have only lost 1" in the last 12 years. As Arnold said, ( in my best austrian accent) "...it's all worth it!"

whats an inch or so dude, especially when your 6'1". if you where 5'6" or something id say try to hang on to whatever hieght youve got. what would you rather have, a wierd deformed, misshaped look and be 6'1"...or be proportioned and have thick, badass looking legs and be 6'-6'1/2". thats an easy choice for me. just do the squats bro, heavy as f*ck, do the squats...

Chicks wont mind, I can spare a couple of inches...

Wait you said height? shit dude I'm short enough as it is, no more heavy squats for me.

Because my legs are getting too big for the rest of me.

I can squat double bodyweight for reps. Full squats. And I'm over 6'

Why don't you relieve the spinal compression?? 1st. make sure your posture is balanced and even. Most lifters are horribly internally rotated at the shoulders, have a kyphotic thoracic spine and an anteriorally rotated pelvis which results in standing shorter.

then make sure you stretch your lower back and especailly your quadratus lumborum, for an anterior rotation & tight QL cause a false shortening of leg length.

Then do reverse hyperextensions, this execrsie actually relieves compression, increases intra-disc space and provides a mechanical pumping force to drive fluid into the discs, preventing disc dehydration and disintegration - one of the main causes of a decrease in height due to accompanying age.

Squats rule!!!

I think you're wrong on this. I don't see AAS having anything to do with the acceleration of the compression of the spine. It all has to do with the weight they are using and their form. AAS does nothing to the spine directly.

Just another excuse for not doing squats. Quit making excuses and spend sometime in the squat rack.

I know when I trained in high school I never trained legs and I never did any real heavy back work like deads and cleans. Luckily for me I have naturally thick and muscular legs, but even so, I could never get past 168lbs BW and my upper body although looking good, lacked real SIZE. Couple of years later and no training I study up and realize the horrible mistakes I made like overtraining BIG time and nearly as bad if not worse, not training legs and back back then. So I start squatting, deadlifting and cleaning hard and heavy weighing 182lbs and by the end of the year I was up to 220lbs. Albeit, I gained some fat, but I guarantee I put on a legit 25-30lbs of muscle over my whole body in that time frame naturally and I attribute that mainly to the heavy leg and back work I did. So in short, squat hard and heavy for overall size and strength, use the leg press as an accesory for leg development, and do some form of heavy lifting off the ground for those erector spinae.
