Now Even the Tree Guy Wants a Job!

We had storms here a few weeks back and I needed to get a few trees cleaned up.

So I snagged the guy who was doing it for our neighborhood. He starts talking to me and it turns out he's an out of work mechanical engineer.

So a guy like him would count as "employed" albeit he's very under-employed.

This economy is reaaaaaally shitty IMO -- worse than people are letting on.

that's fucked up...and, it's a fact that the unemployment statistics are skewed significantly...things ARE a lot worse than statistics would lead you to believe.

that said, powdered metal manufacturing (the core of our economy hear in nc pa) is booming again and has been for well over a year...he could probably find a job here or in michigan (the other hotbed for PM) in about 5 minutes...that industry employs a ton of me's.

The recession is hitting everyone, but I'd bet it's hitting lower income earners harder. Threatening the people who sign the paychecks with taxes, regulation and unions are going to pucker-up those purse strings in a big way.

You would think someone like me would have no problem getting a job in Electronics Technology......going on 3 yrs without work.

No, none of the 39 million black people in the United States worked prior to the recession.

they don't have to now.

They all voted for Obama!

might be time to look into changing fields

The government doesn't give a shit because all the politicians are corrupt. Until people actually act up and do something about it the politicians will continue to treat the people like sheep.

As he was laboring over the debris was he cursing at George W

LOL @ the POTUS having any control over economic growth, although he can stifle it with executive orders and supporting bad legislation. If you accept the premise wall street caused the economic collapse then you have to blame Clinton and his signing of the repeal of Glass-Stiegel. I was taking my seminar in banking law for my thesis when it happened...the professor predicted a major banking bailout within a decade and he was right.

The immediate issue with the jobs market now is the shock factor. We're all waiting for taxes, regulation and unions to increase. We'll never add a US job unless it's completely unavoidable.

I'm amazed that Obama's economic advisers haven't explained to him how uncertainty impacts business decisions or he just didn't care because he was so focused on getting Obamacare passed and assumed his Keynesian policies would be successful.

Keynesian economics and nation-building in middle east countries have some similar characteristics:

1) They seem like a reasonable idea on the front-end, with what appear to be well-defined risks.

2) They are vastly too expensive.

3) They take far too long.

4) In the name of compassion, lot of people suffer along the way.

5) We've tested both theories recently (Iraq over the last 10 years, Keynesian policies over the last two), so we should have relevant, easy-to-comprehend results.

6) They don't work.

But here's an interesting test: I suspect conservatives learned their lesson with nation-building (I sure did, I really don't like Libya). But how many libs have learned their lesson about Keynesian economics?

Any conservatives here ready to nation-build Iran?

Any liberals here ready for a second stimulus?

He's a tree fogger I bet

The recession is almost over anyway, we have new roads, bridges, and money to build schools.

Bro, I think we are past Keynesian economics! Even Keynes berated Roosevelt for too much spending.
Obama has spent more than all other 43 presidents combined.I think the goverment entered into Kleptocracy. Next phase will be a Banana Republic....

unemployment was pretty low in the plantation days

I remember once, I was taking a Biology exam.

The question was, "Name two things found in cells."

Apparently "Blacks" and "Mexicans" were not the correct answers?

@ceo

Ahahahahah!

In any case, the immediate future is not as bright as the media would have us believe, and the medium/long-term is significantly more grim. I read an article a couple days ago lauding the fact that 18000 jobs had been created... never mind that this was significantly below expected levels, or that the jobs created are majorly entry-level and low-wage positions.

As someone who places a lot of value on and faith in individual hard work leading to collective increased productivity and compensation, I generally have a more optimistic view of financial and economic status than my many of my peers. That said, I think it is a prudent decision at this time to move a portion of one's wealth into something other than USD. In a worst-case hyper-inflation scenario, real estate/precious metals/foreign currency will retain a more stable value than anything in US dollars, equities included.

Good luck everyone. Remember that the diligence and dedication required for successful bodybuilding are the same traits that will help you succeed and prosper in your careers and lives. If the world as a whole is on a downward trend, it does not mean that you cannot earn, maintain, and build wealth. Use the same techniques you've etched into your lives for health and fitness to stay informed in your careers and investments, and there you will not fail.
