The company that you worked for for 29.9 years just fired you..1 month short of collecting a pension..too fucking bad. You should have worked someplace else.

Very political thread, very interesting to see everyones perspective. To answer some questions: I did not know about the gm pension tax, I dont work there but my company doesnt do that.
On average with benifits included the pay equals about$55 an hour.
The conditions I work in would make a lot of people vomit. It gets up to 120 degrees in the summer, there is a cloud of thick smog inside the whole plant, the chemicals I inhale from my machine cause cancer after long term exposure, the floor is covered with oil, and on and on. I am not complaining, although I dont like the job, but pays more than most jobs you have to have a college degree for. There are many people there with masters, and bachlors degrees.
In my opinion in the next 20 years there will be very few auto plants in the US due to cheap labor in other parts of the world. Our company has plants throughout Europe and in Mexico, which the can produce the same product for much less. Auto factories and auto parts factories are closing at a fast rate now, so the high paid auto worker will be put to a end. What to do: Get some other skills, or go back to college as I am doing now. I believe the plant I work for will be closed in 2007.
About the China cars, I did see a special on tv about them, and they do need much improvment before they could think of marketing them in the US, but they may be great cars in 20 years, never know, but now they are junk.
