My weight is gettin out of control...

Took me awhile to find a site that looked like it was legit with alot of participants who are actually keen on fitness. Iam currently 170lbs, at 5'9". I have an okay body mass now, with pretty good muscle tone. I can pump off 13-15 chin ups no prob, 60 situps, 60 pushups. Iam in the Army so these are all base requirements. However, I have noticed that my I am geting heavier. Ive gained about 10 lbs in under 5 months, along with comments from friends and coworkers that I have gained weight. Iam activate at work, 8 hours of the day, but when I get home I am exhuasted and will maybe hit the gym once or twice a week, mostly once. I know I need to exercise more, but at doin what exactly is stumping me. My Thighs/buttocks are naturally big/strong from TaeKwonDo as a teenager, and carrying packs on marches at present. Iam gaining alot of excess fat in the stomach and chest area along with the thighs and buttocks. Should I do Alot of cardio to burn that off or should I target those areas with weight training ( Iam under the impression that that will create lean muscle that uses the fat closest to the muscle being used). Any feedback will be usefull. thanks

my advice to u is go to the diet forum and start there.... u probably need to diet to lsoe that weight! cardio is a good supplement to diet but otherwise there is no excuse. im starting to bulk now as im 6'2" 160 lbs :( but definately head over there and post your diet, or post it here and ill take a look at it if a mod doesn't move it first :)

agreed, analyze your diet, being as active as you are, there's no reason to be fat unless you are eating like crap

I don't know if I would day "out of control". 5' 9" and 170? I'm 5'6" and 175, look at my gallery, I'm not a monster (yet). I was in the Marines for 7 years and I know that the most I could weigh was 170. I also know that the Marines have the strictest height and weight standards. I'll tell ya this, hitting the gym "twice a week, mostly once" isn't going to do much for ya. As you get older your metabolism changes. You need to look at what you eat, and what you do for excersize. Do you do any cardio? Bottom line is this: if calories taken in > calories burned = fat stored. No partner, when your 5'9" and 245lbs like me your out of control. I could gain 10pounds in the next week if I wanted to.

I am doing sprints now 2-3x week.

Its your diet and your "impression" is wrong! Lifting does not "target" fat near the area being worked. Muscle does burn fat, that is why you want to increase the amount you have. Cardio burns fat while you are doing it, muscle burns fat 24/7. So which is best????

Learn how to lift correctly, work entire body, use compound lifts and you will be happy with the results.

Those are some good points Valerie, but not entirely true. Cardio gives your metabolism a boost, so you continue to burn calories at a higher rate after you do cardio. You're right on about when you burn fat, you burn it from everywhere, not just where you are working. People think that working abs will make them skinny.

No partner, not doubtful. I didnt say it was all muscle! Yes, I can add 10 pounds in 1 week. Easily.
wow....... thats like 35000 extra calories a week..... no offesne but unless ur eating 10000 calories a daym (7000 extra 3000 essential)..... the numbers dont add up, who knows tho

Wait a minute i can and have gained 10 pounds on the scale in a week regularly and sure I can eat 10,000 calories a day. Most of the time I'm guessing there's some water weight in their because I'm usually pretty tired of eating after about 3 or 4 days of 10k calories. I can and have done it several times over the last ten years though and I must say it was fun :). Mmmm more gravy....

10000 calories in a day? Have you ever counted calories to see just how much you eat? I can't imagine 10000 in one day. Please post what you eat, how much and when that equals that.

Keep it simple. . .

Cut calories and work your ass off in terms of strength training and cardio. . .burn those calories!

Make sure you stay hydrated.

Good luck!
