My Son Just Got a Job Offer...

Many years ago my son told me that he didn't want to go to college. I understood, but I told him that I'll be damned if I'm going to have a son who makes a career out of working a parts counter in a auto parts store or a Walmart greeter. I told him that he should consider a technical institute to learn a skilled trade or go into the military like I did.

He opted for military and did 6 years active in the US Navy as a Hull Technician, specifically an NDT (Non Destructive Tester) inspecting welds on submarine hulls using radioactive source material...a very technical job that one must test and pass exams to be accepted.

He got out of the Navy a bit less than 2 years ago and after taking mindless, boring jobs at low pay decided to see what he could get using his military training. I helped in with his resume and he sent out a few.

Last week, Northrup-Grumman (world's 4th largest defense contractor) offered him a job starting at $63,000/year.

Yes...I am proud of the boy.

He just got notified today from the HR Rep at Aero-Jet in Rancho Cordova that they've FedEx'd a job offer. This is actually his 3rd job offer and the HR person asked to see his offer from Northrup (which he produced)...

This job would be a 10 minute commute vs. a 2 hour commute. The offer will arrive tomorrow.

hubs doesnt say hed give his left nut anymore for anything...cuz someone made him pay up...jus sayin

be careful what youre willing to offer up

Wow! Wut a great trade.

Still think he should pursue a fed gov't career.

They actually offered a NDI course in the vo-tech here in N.O. but it was dropped.

Apparently it would take the average N.O. public school grad too long to gain the requisite technical skills to ever becum certified.

It's "figure of speech" Shirlene. Out here, the economy is severely depressed. A 26 year old person entering the job market is almost unheard of. We have college grads that can't find jobs.
