Many years ago my son told me that he didn't want to go to college. I understood, but I told him that I'll be damned if I'm going to have a son who makes a career out of working a parts counter in a auto parts store or a Walmart greeter. I told him that he should consider a technical institute to learn a skilled trade or go into the military like I did.

He opted for military and did 6 years active in the US Navy as a Hull Technician, specifically an NDT (Non Destructive Tester) inspecting welds on submarine hulls using radioactive source material...a very technical job that one must test and pass exams to be accepted.

He got out of the Navy a bit less than 2 years ago and after taking mindless, boring jobs at low pay decided to see what he could get using his military training. I helped in with his resume and he sent out a few.

Last week, Northrup-Grumman (world's 4th largest defense contractor) offered him a job starting at $63,000/year.

Yes...I am proud of the boy.

I love to hear good news like this. It's tough for kids out there these days. Even with college or military background. I've had great luck hiring ex military guys, and would try to get them for their discipline and just because I appreciate their service. Its pretty pathetic to see a good kid come looking for a job who has just served his country and no one will hire him.

Anyway, NDT testing is good experience to have. To tie it in to what other people have said about the oil and gas business, there is a lot of NDT testing that needs to be done in gas plants and refineries for mechanical integrity programs. Its the kind of experience that lends itself to starting one's own business. Almost all those facilites use 3rd party contractors for NDT testing. Get set up to be the contractor for a few facilities and you would be making huge bucks. Oil companies pay out the ass for that kind of service. To do it right you would need to be able to analyse the data and get a pressure vessel inspector cert etc, but its all doable, looking at the big picture.

Indeed. And it just got better for the boy. He got an offer from AeroJet based out of Rancho Cordova, CA yesterday. Here's the gig...

If he took the job at Northrup, he'll be earning 63K/year and looking at a round trip commute of 4 hours/day (they can't live in Silicon valley or the East Bay and I don't blame them. We come from the East Bay and I worked in Silicon Valley...It flat out SUX).

That being said, AeroJet "fast tracked" my son after they knew he had an offer and put an offer in front of him at 60K/year....BUT!!!!

He can live in Rancho Murietta with a lower cost of living that the East Bay. He'd have a 10 minute commute, and he'd be only 30 minutes away from us as opposed to 2 hours.

Not to mention that he'll be working on projects for heavy lift payload boosters in Aerospace.

Darn kid has had 3 job offers in the past 2 weeks in an economy like this. Yes...color me proud.

It sounds like an easy decision to stay near home and have an extra four hours a day of free time. 4 hours is like a half a vacation day every day!

There is nothing like the feeling of seeing your kid do well. I look forward to the day my oldest gets his shit together and there is a bright future ahead of him. right now, the future looks kind of murky. :worried:
