My Red-Tail Boa...

My daughter has one. I hate snakes.

You have a beautiful snake. Eating rabbits? rats? small children? ;-)

I don't know that much about red boas, do you need to worry about him constricting you? He's getting big enough to put a hurting on someone, if he is so inclined.

they dont contstrict if they cant eat it, usually.

nice snake...

What's the biggest thing you've seen him eat? 6 feet....better keep him in a cage cuz he could eat small dogs, cats, hell even babies if he got out.

I feed him a couple very large rats every couple of weeks. It won't be long before he'll need rabbits though. He could certainly eat a cat or a small dog though, if the opportunity presented itself. I have read that any constrictor over 8 feet is considered strong enough to kill an average adult. That never really happens though except by very large pythons (20+ feet), but experts still say that if it is over 8 feet, you shouldn't handle it alone... Someone should be nearby, just in case.

They will strike and bite to defend themselves if threatened, but won't constrict unless it is for food... It isn't a normal bite either, more of just a strike to tell you to back off... I've been bitten once by this snake (it had been a while since he had eaten, so he was more aggressive than normal!). Holy shit did that hurt!!!

you silly twat! there has never been any evidence of human predation by a snake. humans run a lower body temperature than rodents and small mammals. it's a huge difference when left up to snakes. plus there is the scent.

Actually I saw a documentary on Natgeo about big snakes where a 20+ ft anaconda stalked and killed a man in South or central America. It also reported on a 20+ ft reticulated python that killed a woman. They claimed that anything over 16 ft will have the ability to open its jaws wide enough to swallow a human. For this to happen though, the human must be on it's side so that the collar bones don't inhibit the snake's swallowing.

It has been reported numberous times in the wild, but never in captivity. Reticulated Pythons are usually the culprit. I saw part of a video where one was swallowing a gazelle or something like that... and in another video, one was swallowing a medium sized tiger. They are ambush hunters, as they (obviously) could never catch those type of animals otherwise.

I'm sure I could take down a 20 python.

killed yes, eaten, no.

I saw a video reinactment on the discovery channel where a zookeeper got in trouble handling a boa by himself and it started constricting him. He said that his life was flashing before his eyes and he was marvelling at what a dumb way he was going to die. I forget what happened that he got away. That is why I asked. So, evidently, even though they don't usually do it, it happens once in a blue moon.

boas don't do shit like that. plus, they hardly ever reach the true giant status. pythons are the potentially dangerous ones.

It scared the shit out of me when it happened. I was reaching in the cage to pick him up when it happened. Those fuckers strike so fast that you don't even know what happened till it's over. I just shut the cage and cleaned up my hand. He bit me on the palm of my hand and I had to pick a few of those needles they have for teeth out of my hand... Then I just bandaged it up because it was bleeding pretty bad.

It didn't scare me off because I know that even though I've held the snake hundreds of times, it is still a (potentially) dangerous animal with instincts and can never really be "tame" the way something like a dog can. It did give me more respect for the animal, that is for sure. I make sure to be more careful regarding handling him, and really do so only when he is fed regularily...

Do large snakes like the python and the anaconda eat people? Occasionally such attacks are recorded in the wild. In 1972 a python in Burma ate an eight-year-old boy. In 1927 there was the story about a jeweler called Maung Chit Chine. He hid under a tree during a rain storm and afterward his friends could only find his hat and shoes. When they killed a nearby gouged Python, they found the rest of Chines' body, swallowed feet first (though this seems opposite to normal snake behavior) and whole, inside the snake.

Strangely enough, many big snakes attack humans not in the jungle, but in suburbia. Pythons are often kept as pets, but can turn deadly without warning. In 1993 in Colorado, a 15-year-old boy weighing 95 pounds was attacked by the family's python. The snake was only of medium size being 11 feet long and weighing 53 pounds, yet was able to kill the boy, though it made no attempt to eat him.

Here's an interesting link to pictures of a snake eating a kangaroo... (Don't click on this link if you don't want to see a snake swallowing something!!!) http://www.ebaumsworld.com/snake-kangaroo.html

They say it is a Boa, but it's patterns resemble that of a Carpet Python... Anyway, it is amazing how far they can stretch their mouths!! It isn't even that big of a snake compared to some of the "true" giant snakes.
