My Father is Taking Oxycontin.....

......and he's afraid of opiods. I posted about 10 days ago that he took a nasty fall down some stairs and was knocked unconscious. He had broken bones in his arm, wrist, and hand. He had surgery for those on Wednesday. They attached the bones with metal plates. Normally dad would refuse any pain medicine but I told my mom to make sure he at least gets a RX for something even if he doesn't get it filled. At least it's there if he changes his mind. He's afraid of them due to their addictiveness. He quickly decided that he needed the medicine. I had a metal plate put in my hand and it hurt like hell for 3 or 4 days. Then it slowly started easing up.

I'm a recovered pain pill addict and I was introduced to the drugs by having surgery. Lortab was my vice. At one point I would take 150 mg of hydrocodone in an evening to get high. I guess my dad is scared the same thing will happen to him. I told him to just make sure he's taking the prescribed dose and as soon as the pain goes away to throw away any leftover pills. My problem was that the surgeon wrote the prescription for too many pills giving me a good stash of leftovers which I abused. Then I hooked up with an unethical "pain management" doctor who would flat out ask you what kind of pills you wanted and what dose and the would write the RX.

I think my old man will be fine knowing what mistakes I made. I think surgeons should pay more attention to the post operation pain medicine that what most of them currently do.

PM coming:p

STAY way from OXY as if it was the devil

for it IS

if he has to use it, it better not be more then once a day ( preferably at night to sleep)

any more and his endorphin endogenous creation will shut off and he will need more, and more and more

As long as dad uses the medication exactly as it is prescribed he'll be fine. He's aware of the dangers and it's not like the medical professionals are not aware of dangers, they know what to put him on, and they know how to taper it off.

The fact is, plates and screws and broken ribs hurt like hell to begin with and frankly, aches and pains are not easier to tolerate as you age

oxy! no way, why not something like vic's or perc's , those are not addicting like oxy's from the stories I recently heard on the radio!! that's some scarey shit!

had both on hand/ prescribed to me after my 6 wisdom teeth were pulled... yes 6, lol. Non addictive, only made me sick if I took on an empty stomach which I learned when I was sitting in jury duty for 3 hours... euuuhhhhhgg! that sucked! the day after my teeth were pulled!

Lot of fucking dopers and future rehab participants up in this bitch.

MM there is NO tapering off Oxys

after constant use over just a handful of days endogenous endorphin production shuts off

its an "all or nothing drug"

I've been listening to doctor's prescribing orders full time for more than seven years. I had to deal with this stuff when my teenage son broke his elbow and had to have it pinned. People get into trouble when they don't take pain meds as prescribed. Oxy has its uses. And like many other beneficial things, used incorrectly it can be dangerous or harmful. Used as directed under physician supervision it can provide relief when nothing else will touch the pain :whatever:

Just about the worst pain you can have is a bone having something inserted into it (which is why bone cancer is the worst there is).

I agree that OXY will improve the perception of quality of life for those termin ill or with Breakthrough pain that i hopeless to treat

so proud of you! lol
Hey, the one place I always said that western medicine has succeeded is trauma treatment.

I'm still none to happy with the narrow-minded perception of the true cause of chronic illnesses, particularly cancers and autoimmune diseases, and medicines blanket dismissal of the danger of frequent or regular exposure to low grade environmental toxins :whatever:

Nor do I know how they'll expand their paradigms. The fact is, medicine needs to think outside the box, realizing that a) the germ theory and b) empirical thinking are not the only answers to curing people (actually you could include C) reliance on chemical pharmaceuticals but that's a whole other can of worms). I'm NOT saying those are invalid, but true health goes beyond those concepts. The true key to healing is prevention and enabling the body to heal itself.

I don't hate doctors, just the dollar driven industry medicine has become and those who see people as dollar signs.

I honestly can't believe they still prescribe oxy for anything considering the risk.

I could see using it in a hospital/ER type setting. But not writing a script for it and sending people on there way.

sounds like your dad is worried you are going to jack his script and relapse.
would explain his hesitation to bring that shit into his home.

I was worried that he might not get his medicine because of this. I told him that he was going to need the medicine and I assured him that he did not have to worry about me stealing his pills. Like I said, I've quit using opiates. It's hard to say that I have recovered because there are still times when I crave some pain pills. I've been prescribed lortab for a legitimate reason (dental problem) since I quit abusing. I was able to take it without going back to my old ways.

vics to oxys to herron. thats how the progression goes. it seen it happeen to several people. they go to the ron because it's cheaper.
