Muscle Cars

Anyone into this new muscle car "war" between the Challenger, Mustang and Camaro? I've been following the Dodge Challenger for the past few months and I don't see how anyone can't love the Challenger. the 09 version is supposed to be coming out with a shaker hood. Dodge is doing the best job of keeping true to the original--nostalgic and modern at the same time.

i am sad that the GTO is no more. i prefer it to those other 3 though the mustang (loved the retro job they did) and the charger follow closely behind.

I drive a 2007 Mustang GT. It's the shit. Pretty fast, looks good, not too expensive. Can't wait until i can afford a supercharger :p

I love the Challenger but I don't know if they will do what it takes to remain competitive whith the Camaro. The rumor is that there is a 6.4L 525hp motor planned for the Challenger which will be just right for that car!!! The HEMI is hard to beat! I have the 5.7 HEMI in my 300 and with the additional items and mods i have added i can take Mustang gt's and other mild muscle cars. Once the warranty is out I will replace the heads, cam and add 100 shot of Nitrous so I can play with some bigger boys. 4 door sleeper!!!

Here's how I can not love the Challenger -- 4100 pounds. It's a porker. It's just a 300/Magnum/Charger with a few inches cut off the wheelbase.

Sounds sweet bro. Problem with all the hemi cars is the excessive weight and automatic trannys.

My GT has a C&L racer intake, kooks LT headers, a SCT-3 xcalibrator and 4.10 gears. I have run 12.8 at 108 mph before at the track. I guess my 0-60 is 4.7 or so. Hp is about 340-345.

Eventhe SRT-8 models can't hang with me, stock anyways.

Then there's my mothers 2008 M5, a real beast.

WHAT have you done to your 300? I just bought one last week. My first HEMI. LOL.

Meh.

Give me the old time muscle car any day of the week over these new wannabe's. :)

agreed! I used to own a 72 Charger SE, with a 440 Magnum powerplant. Fun times.

Yeah I am old school when it comes to muscle power (horsepower). Even though Roush has some pretty $h!tty engines in Nascar ( hahah did I say nascar oh my God) thy do sell a 525 HP that really does kick a$$. Hemi's aren't what they used to be, even with a car body that is Carbon Composite. Mustang's are cool. Saleen especially.

wasn't 1972 shortly after the end of the muscle car era?

I believe it's typically thought of as being from 1964 (starting with the GTO) to 1972.

The oil/gas crisis of 1973 saw the decline of big horsepower V8's and the end of the muscle car.

Interesting....

"A muscle car is an automobile with a high horse power engine, modest weight, capable of producing high levels of acceleration.[1] The term principally refers to American, Australian and South African models and generally describes a 2-door rear wheel drive mid-size car with a large, powerful V8 engine and special trim, intended for maximum torque on the street or in drag racing competition. It is distinguished from sports cars, which were customarily considered smaller, two-seat cars, or GTs, two-seat or 2+2 cars intended for high-speed touring and possibly road racing. High-performance full-size or compact cars are arguably excluded from this category, as are the breed of compact sports coupes inspired by the Ford Mustang."

A few years ago the "classic" Hemi cars were getting TOP DOLLA at the Barrett Jackson Car Auction. I'm talking WELL over 100k for a number's matching -Hemi powered ride! People were sellin 'em like hotcakes and makin mega cash! This year, those same Hemi's took a nose dive on the market. Who 'da thunk?

Again this year--

The SS Camero's were hot and the '57 Chevy's (which turned 50 years old last year) stole the show with higher than hell prices. I guess it was the year for all the rich boys to reclaim their 50's/ 70's/ 80's high school years.lol

We (my brother and father mostly) had a '70 Monte Carlo Special Edition with a Chevy 400 small block that was a rocket. Them small block's (400's) are sweet and shouldn't be overlooked. Actually they are kinda hard to find.

was a sad year, it saw the introduction of pollution gear which saw factory v8s performance die in the arse

However, despite America's love for horsepower, the Clean Air Act of 1970 called for pollution control devices that hampered performance. And then the oil embargo of 1973 limited the supply of gasoline. By the time congress passed the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rule in 1978 the Muscle Car was gone forever.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_car

The fierce competition led to an escalation in power that peaked in 1970, with some models offering as much as 450 horsepower (336 kW) (with this and others likely producing as much or more actual power, whatever their rating).

that's what I was talking about, I originally read it in a book my folks gave me as a kid about muscle cars.

some very minor emission controls werew placed on cars beginning in 71 models I believe. These could easily be undone. They didn't really start fucking them up until 73-74. Even then with a few mods you could get your hp back up.

That was also the year when insurance companies raised rates for performance cars. All these things -- smog, fuel crisis, insurance -- spelled the end of proper muscle cars and gave us 175HP Trans Ams.

But have you seen any of the videos showing it move? It moves like it has no weight on it. You should watch some of the YouTube videos. Eitherway it looks good, and if I could get it I'd get the jet black. I'm still kind of jealous of the guy who won the exclusive B5 Blue Challenger.

Love them?
I can't even like them till I drive them. That's what its all about right?
Well then again I have a friend who has a new hummer that just sits in her driveway--I think she bought it for the looks.

I like the 09 trans am the best.

There's no such thing. There will be no new Firebird. The only car Pontiac will get from this platform will be the next GTO.

The 60's GTO is prolly my least fav old time muscle car. I never liked it's body style.

Yeah, I heard some talk about them(GTO's) comimg back in '08 too. Have not followed the story. I'm sure my hubby has though.

So many old cars I'd love to have. If I had the means I'd be like Jay Leno with his car collection.

Believe it or not. There are collectors out there that make Jay's collection look like the "bone yard" you find in most car lots.

If you live near Scottsdale, AZ., Ceo, YOU must go to the Barett Jackson Auction sometime.

If I had ONE car I would sell my soul for; it'd be a Nomad. God, I love those so much...Grrrrr.

I like the older muscle cars personally. If I were to get a newwer fats car I'd go with a subaru wrx sti and be spanking those gas guzzling fatasses. But thats just me.

Yeah, but they invented the genre.

A '66 GTO is one of my favorite cars ever.

Barrett Jackson is a joke. Classics and exotics, the mainstays of classic car auctions for years, have been almost completely supplanted by hotrods and muscle cars.

I need to take my roger clemens porsche to auction
it's already been through barrett-jackson

somehow I need to link up with a nutbag sports fan who's got cash

Any of you going to the NY Auto show? I'm supposed to be in New york next weekend and I think I'm going to try to make it to the show since they are going to have the challenger there. I'm tired of just looking at pics and Youtube.
