Mary Winkler is already out of jail.. She is the one from Tennesse that shot her preacher husband in the back with a shotgun...

She killed an abuser and never denied it. It was considered voluntary manslaughter, not murder. You keep kicking a dog sooner or later that dog is gonna bite back.

If more wifebeaters got a softball sized hole blown in their back maybe they'd think twice before abusing someone who's half their size.
I think she didn't have any evidence except her own testimony that he ever laid a finger on her. From what I heard, she never had called police, gone to the doctor, or anything.

Susan Smith happened in the next town over from me. She was upset because the bosses son would not go out with her because of her children... She deserves the death penalty..
Hog tying her in the back seat of a car and rolling the car into a lake would be justice.

Yeah, to put your babies in their car seats where they can't get out and drown them is such a CRUEL way to kill them. I can't believe a mommy could see her kids in that situation and not panic to go save them.

I don't care if he beat her like a rented mule...doesn't give her the right to kill him....not unless he literally had her barricaded in the house like a prisoner, with the phones disconnected to prevent her from calling the police.

You're abused? Leave, and let the cops/courts deal with it...period. You shouldn't be taking the law into your own hands.

I like the way you think.

Tell it like it is.....I agree 110%!
I'm glad she's out, maybe she can have somewhat of a happier life now.

It's not that cut and dry. Abuse is a funny monster and not every woman reacts the same.
Maybe she knew if she was to complained, he would try to kill her or harm the kids. She put a FINAL end to the pain and threats.
Now she's out and will fear him no more. Justice was done!
I think the law should be taken in our own hands sometimes. ie: if a man rapes and murders a child, I believe the parents of that child should be able to extract their own justice.

Gotta realize what the verdict of manslaughter means, she never planned to do it. She was a preachers wife, she might have been trying to be a "good, demure, respectful wife," she genuinely might have thought this was her lot in life, that was why she didn't take it to the authorities.

Voluntary manslaughter ALMOST falls under the category of self defense.

And sometimes leaving is not an option. First of all there is the very real situation of Stockholm syndrome. You have to look at the whole picture. When you're a single man saying "Why the hell didn't she leave?" it seems blatently obvious. But as a daughter of an abuser, I'm telling you, it ain't so easy. They had kids, he was a leader in the community, preachers don't make a lot of money. Where would she go with three kids? And if you want to say, so leave the kids, if you read other articles about the case she had good reason to fear leaving him and leaving the children with him, and he had isolated her from her family. Plus her family might have said simply "You can't leave your husband, you're married." That's a very Christian mindset.
