Karma inflation... How to fix it???

Status
Not open for further replies.
How about we go to a system of 1 point per hit? There is no K-Power, as such. You can buy extra hits using Karma in the store and any hits you receive go into your hit-bank and be converted into Karma at some moderate rate. They would cost a lot more to buy extra than the conversion rate into Karma.

Karma would be the currency of EF for the store, Bookie events, Poker etc and could be given away as now but would be disassociated from your hitting.

1) Hitting would be a simple one-point per hit.
2) Received hits could be traded in for Karma for making purchases and betting.
3) Extra Hits could be purchased but would be quite expensive on Karma.
4) Everyone gets a standard number of hits per day, as now, which could, as now, vary by membership type.

This separates Karma from hits without any messy formula nonsense. The conversion rate from Hits to Karma could even vary according to the needs of the system, akin to a bank trading rate. People could hoard their Hits for a rainy day or a good conversion deal.

1 pt hits sounds ok....or how does this sound?
put k power into categories......ok i have a little over 600 k hits...put me in the group that hits say 100 k hits....hammy having all his k should maybe people able to hit like 1000 k power or some thing...does any one understand what i am trying to say?
instead of individual k hit power make areas that we all fall into.....i.e people who have 1-50 k power hit for like 2 karmas..people will 50-100 k power hit for 20 and so on

That does nothing to solve the underlying inflation, it merely slows us down or moves us back. We want a long-term solution else we'll be reincarnating this thread next year.

Do like they do in the real world taxes the millionaires to the hill and give to the poor. I bet Hammy has a cow over this :lmao:

so far i think blut wump has a good idea...making hits worth only 1 hit...it is like proboards.....although maybe the hits should be worth 5 though.

1, 5 or a 100 wouldn't matter. It's the conversion to currency (Karma) that determines what you can do with your hits. If the hits are worth more per Hit then they'd adjust the conversion into Karma downwards. If you want to hit people for more then you could purchase more Hits with your own Karma.

The idea is to keep Karma as your spending power but to remove it a step from hitting to give the system a little more control over it.

If you allow 'big-hitters' to exist then you have to compensate for them in the conversion to Karma to keep the inflation in check. Then again, given that it would be simple to do that, maybe 'big-hitters' could be worked comfortably into the system.

A variable rate on conversion of Hits to Karma would be the real tool in inflation control but, to avoid people falling further behind as groups form, the 'big-hitters' concept would probably have to go.

I also think that ideas of further restricting the frequency of re-hitting someone is a bad idea. Back when I was almost solely in the training forum, the most common interaction with the karma button was a message telling me that I needed to spread it more. That was what brought me and probably others to C&C and our current situation.

We need to reevaluate the exchange rate of the currency. Remember when the Italian Lira was 1350 to the dollar? Just adjust everyone's karma and karmic power by a factor of 1000. Anyone reduced to a value of either factor less than 1 remains at 1. Adjust your other formulations ala MightyMouse from there.

That way the same people who have a large karmic power and value will still be larger than everyone else but to a lesser degree. You could actually keep the current formula with this solution and it would take a year or so to require an adjustment again.

It would take about a year and we'd be back to where we were, maybe around Christmas time. It's not a long-term solution.

Agreed, so after altering the current values, the algorithm would have to be changed for it to have a lasting effect.

you would create a permenent "rich" and "poor" class by lowering the value of karma. It would make it near impossible for anyone to reach the levels of karma that FG, Sponge, Soklu, Hammy, etc have - because they acheived their "rich" status on the old system. With a new system in place of awarding 1 point per hit, it would take years for a new member to reach that level without buying karma.

Or is that the point? You wish to make more money, so you devalue awareded karma so that people will be forced to purchase karma from you.

i'm sorry to have contributed to this need of inflation.. i should stop giving out huge karma hits to everyone...i should have known better when i had given away 4, but damn... i couldnt help myself and i gave away a fifth one, i admit it.

With the one-point-per-hit system (posts 101 and 108) the value of Karma is actually increased. Some people would be left with huge Karma holdings but Karma is merely the currency to allow you to do things on EF such as betting and the store and maybe an EF lottery.

Eventually, those holdings would become eroded though expenditure by control of the Hits-to-Karma conversion factor which would be monitoring the total Karma in the system. Karma would inexorably leak from the system except for purchases until the sum of all Karma was low enough to encourage more favourable conversion rates.

It would change the way that people do their hits and it would control inflation. Karma could still be purchased and for a while might be the main source of Karma influx.

We are told on a daily basis that we should only award personal karma to others that write a good post, present a good idea, etc on the forums. Karma "whoring" is frowned upon. I have no problem with this, but I believe that a lot of the new karma millionaires are from the bookie forum and lotteries. Both these venues are just a short cut to increasing your karmic power more quickly (like "whoring", but on a much larger scale), and they are a large part of the reason we're facing karmic inflation.

I find it odd that we are told to only give personal karma to the deserving, while at the same time being told that we can bet all of it on a sporting event.

I think the problem of karma inflation is the creation of new karmas and that is from karma hitting.
The bookie forum does not create new karma, it simply shifts it around. There is a winner and a loser with the exceptions of 'bookies gone bad' like 75th who couldnt cover his bookie bet, the bookie forum has nothing to do with new karma and is not very busy anyhow.

THe karma inflation comes from the heavy hitters that can create 60,000 to 90,000 karma points if they max out their daily limit.

Four months time for ten heavy hitters alone can put into the system nearly a hundred million karma points. This rate of growth is unsustainable.

you're right.

I really don't think there's any fair way to adjust the system. There will be complaints from members who feel they've been shorted, no matter what. I think Blut Wump + Redguru probably have the best solution. There is no perfect solution to this.

or make it so plat members can credit the karma they have into certain months of plat membership, so this way they cant sue u for robbery since somepaid real money for their karma.

give them the option to redeem it by a certain time period and put all sorts of banners that detail it so u can hope some people are too lazy or forgot to redeem it. make it like a huge form they have to fill out to deter some people from doing it, since somepeoples time is more valuable than their money.

but do the 65% thing

Take the #karma/#posts and multiply it by 100, this is a better measure.

For illustrative purposes: If someone has 100 karma and 100 posts that would be 100*(100/100)=100.

So my new value would be:

(2,390,825/9521)=251.1 x 100 = 25,111

And so on.

This discourages people from posting, as more posts will lower your karma. The LAST thing we want is less activity on the boards.

what about slowing down on how often our K power is going up? Instead of 1 karmic power for each 1000 posts (and for each month) for plats, make it to be like - we get 1 karmic power increase every lets say 5000 or 10 000 posts (or each 3 or 6 months)

That really doesn't change it much. Secondly, if karma power should go up it should go up by the months you'be been a member here. Not by the amounts of K members whore daily.

there is no limit to the amount of karma someone can have. As long as there are bookie events, someone could win a trillion karma. With real money in the real world, additional value has to be created. The current system is the equivalent of allowing people to print their own money, and then acting surprised at rampant inflation. :)

You have to control the supply and lower interest rates. :)

(1) Make bookie a separate forum with a separate currency.

(2) Karma tax. The typical graudated tax.

There also has to be a limit on the total karma available. For example, you decide that there will be a karma reserve of say, one billion karma. That is then exchanged among people and increases proportionally to the number of new members or something.

That way, getting into the karma game is easy - you can get 1,000 or 50,000 with ease, but if you want to get 10,000,000, you might have to pay a higher price for it, because there is less to go around.

You could also encourage more members to join.

You can't devalue it now because there is no limit on how much comes into the total

What percentage of those 116,000 actually log in on a daily, or even weekly basis?

I still say tax the bookie forum. Each winning is taxed 10%. Or something along that line

I've seen various references to taxation but what would you tax? Taxation is usually linked to flow of something, typically on earnings, gifts/inheritances and purchases. We are already taxed on gifting Karma and, effectively, on purchases since that K leaves the system.

That leaves us with earnings unless by 'tax' most of you simply mean that we lose a chunk of our holdings on a regular basis (Karma erosion) or as a one-off at some point. BRR has already stated that there is no intention to take our K away from us and I can't see that any consideration of this moves us forwards.

Taxing earnings (ie our daily hits) is something which would deter hitting if the hitter were taxed for hits made. Taxing the hittee is equivalent to fiddlng with the formula.

I don't see any mileage in taxation as a solution to inflation. I can see an argument in favour of taxing bets but it wouldn't be a significant part of curbing inflation.

Is this the bookie forum? I think I'm lost.

Lots of good ideas in here and frankly I am left with restating the obvious. If you want to control the inflation then the inflation should be targeted (ie curb the entrence of new K into the system.......not payed for with real monies, of course..=)

there is no point taxing the winnings in the bookie forum as this is a transfer of wealth. karma whoring is creating karma where there was none before and is the sole cause of the rampant inflation

Why are people talking about the bookie forum?
The bookie forum does not create karma, it simply shifts it between, winners, losers and the bookie who runs the line. I dont see how that has anything to do with karma inflation.
If I win in the karma bookie, it comes out of the pocket of the losers or the bookie has to cover it.
People win and lose in the bookies and the totals flow between the three parties but its not a creation of karma like k hitting causes and its a very slow forum.

Its like an office pool, people put money in and then that money is distributed. It does not create a million dollar jackpot from ten people putting five dollars in. 50 bucks goes into the pool, fifty bucks comes out of the event. Same analogy, its not like 50 bucks goes in and then someone wins 5 grand

Bingo!

Karma in has to be gauged against Karma out for a stable system. We have a Karma sink through the store so fresh Karma, aside from purchases, can be allowed into the system. We just need to find a good way to control it.

Agreed on the Bookie forum. Aside from bookies going bad, it's a zero-sum environment.

Bookie forum injects tremendous amounts of karma to a few users. Unsurprisingly, these people take the K the most seriously, and then their hits grow to insane amounts. They hit others, and everyone's karma hits go up dramatically because of the bookie forum.

There is no incentive for the haves to keep the have nots karma-poor, so the bookie forum's result in giant karma hits, which create massive inflation.

I think The_short_one hit on a point that is aggravating to management. They set a price on little green dots, and one day of approving posts nullifies thier price points. I think that is the reason they want to control inflation.

You are using fuzzy math. If there are winners whose k hits go up with wins then the losers or the bookie would have their k hits go down who lost k to them.

Say X= winner
Y= Bookie
Z= loser

Say the bookie ran a line and one person won all the karma from the loser and from the bookie. And to start out with they all had a karma hit power of ten.

So lets say both the Bookie and the Losers were wiped out, X's k hit power would go up while Y and Z's k hit power would go down.
WIth some minor differences in how k power is calculated. Its a wash.

The winner X has just consolidated karma from Y and Z. Lets not get into the fuzzier psychology of a consistent winner also being a consistent k whore. That is a stretch.

I have seen people in the bookie get wiped out. Lestat and Whiskey both lost 500,000 k to me. My k power went up, theirs went down. I average 1.3 k hits per day. Im sure they hit more so that is an example of it taking potential k out of the system.

Plus I transferred it at 10% to Bubbles, she transferred it back to me, I transferred it to Spongebob. Each time paying a tax.
That lump sum of one million K that I won from those guys has been whittled away with transfer fees.

Point being, X, Y and Z hit people with karma and you cant predict which one of the variables hits more. Its most logically a wash.

For someone to get wealthy in the bookies means that someone else has to lose k hitting power. Its a balanced equation

seriously, some ppl think its a game, it does nothing in real life, it just is a game.
You know how some people like playing spades, poker and backgammon?
Karma is just fun
I think that youd do alot more business if you would sell products, like shirts, thongs, etc for karma
When someone would buy all the things they wanted, and ran out of karma, they would buy more karma.
Its a win win situation for everyone

I think at this stage, there is a will amongst the Uppers to put a stamp on Karma for whatever reason. Digger has made several posts lately about it and I'm inclined to expect that another change is in the offing along with the introduction of Chairman types and an increased number of items in the store. Whether we cooperate or go kicking and screaming into the new schemes is up to us.

Having rampant K inflation makes a mockery of the store prices. Many here will recall when a few thou to bomb someone was not to be taken lightly. Now a bomb is no biggie at all to many. If new items are coming into the store then I can understand a feeling that there is need to have inflation restrained.

I still like my suggestions starting at post 101. Put a separation between hits and Karma but leave them linked such that Hits are still your income for being here. Leave those with huge K holdings - they've earned them. More items in the store and more fun things to do with Karma. Control inflation by controlling the conversion from Hits to Karma dependent on K removed from the system via the store or any other new means.

If new items are coming into the store then I can understand a feeling that there is need to have inflation restrained.

or do nothing about the karma system - but raise the price of store items.

Be more like the US government.

and then give 25,000 points for all who have bought some green.

EXACTLY!!

This reminds me of the Ren and Stimpy episode with the history eraser button.

Will BRR push the History Eraser Button? The Shiny pretty button, the candy-like button.

PUSH IT BRR!! PUSH THE HISTORY ERASER BUTTON!!

We are actually playing around with the idea of maybe developing a whole ekarmanic system in the next version of vBulletin 4.0... A sort of Karmic economy system.

I'd like to hear more about this.

SoreArms brings up a good point. There are days where I set aside time to come visit here specifically to dish out karma hits to some of the best posts of the day. Since they are "use it or lose it" it keeps me coming back daily. And I have never come here JUST to dish out karma, I always end up getting involved in some posting at the same time.

I love the bookie forum.

There are just a lot of silly answers to the issue here on this thread.

also none of you here have the slightest idea what you are talking about
how to control it? well thats fairly obvious and no one here obviously has the brain power to state the obvious
will i tell you the answer? um no
has every idea so far on this thread been beyond stupid? um yes, except for dbs post
even more funny is i asked klu what the answer is and she came right out and told me the correct answer
i guess thats why shes #2 and your not
and the reason to control the inflation is .....................?
well that answer i dont have since there really is no point of controlling it, what purpose would that serve? how does the board suffer when someone reaches 10 mil in karmas? has the juicer forum hit the shitter since more than 10 poeple have 3 million in karmas? have the naked chicks stopped showing thier pussies in pics of women since db passed 4 million?
the answer is no

I agree.

However, I think the "problem" is that the items for sale in the Karma Store have become devalued.

I suggest that Karma Store prices become indexed to inflation.

However, it appears that Admin would rather come up with a more draconian solution, just for the sake of asserting their muscle.

1. Taxation will inhibit hitting at all. Some will still do it but it will become an oddity. Anyone who fails to return a hit will probably never get hit again. This will do nothing to restrict tight circles of hitters but only make them better organised. I think this is not a good direction to take.

2. Would slow things down but we need better than a slowing down. To halt inflation, we need that net K into the system is as near as possible to net K out of the system and, ideally, without inhibiting hitting. A slow leakage would give us a gradual deflation.
exactly.and no one will hit some one enless they have a k power that will make up for there lose in k when they hit them back.taxing for a hit will not work and just make it worce.
