What about Shane Hammond? Didn't you say that he could dunk? He doesn't look extremely lean to me either...

Mark Henry could...and I think he weighed 340-360 at the time. He competed in one of the Foot Locker Slam Dunk Contests.

yeah, but relative to themselves leaner they are much slower.
If SHane lost 50lbs, which he can cause he's fat, I'm sure he'd jump another 6-8 inches higher.

These guys both squat a lot more than any of us will ever get too - Shane does 1000lbs+ and he did that at 23!
And remeber these 2 guys are seriously fast twitch!

Most people get fat faster than their squat goes up :)

I know from experience when you put on fat you can't jump as well and go slower. This happened to me a few years back, just before I got my waist up to 40 inches and 20+% bodyfat. I lost inches of vertical jump :)

Fat within the muscle causes friction too.

Power to weight ratio is the name of the game. You can increase your weight as long as power goes up, but that usually means functional muscle gain. I gained 11lbs recently, I can jump 3 inches higher and 7 inches further, because its all real contractile muscle, and not just for show.

I just do NOT believe that if you BULK that you are going to lose your vertical or your speed.

At a bodyweight of 220-230 I did this...
Kata

At 285 I can still do most all of that...with no practice. With practice I am sure that I would be better than ever...

well I can't imagine any elite 100 m sprinter bulking and not losing speed :)

well you know how black people are suppsoed to be more athletic than whites in general - well it turns out from studies that blacks just carry lower BF % and more muscle mass on the average

Anytime we are talking about ANYONE who is elite...you are going to find someone who blows away the curve. We are not talking about an elite 100m sprinter...or Michael Jordan...we are talking about a novice trainer...

To get stronger in the squat and olympic lifts (something I feel is primary to increasing your vertical) you need to eat a lot.

Well I'm doing both - getting my squat up and my Olympic lifts - hit a pr of 185 lbs in the power clean for almost 2 reps. That's almost my bodyweight . This weight 2 months ago was my deadlift weight... :)

I'm no fatter, but I'm eating more protein. That's the key - more protein :)

Yes you do need to eat more, but not excessively more. Just enough for 1 lb a week.

Congrats on the PR and I hope that you prove me wrong. There is a happy medium.

Everyone just needs to understand that just because someone says to bulk...it doesn't mean to get to 20% bodyfat. I am also sure that CoolColJ doesn't meant that you shouldn't try to eat a lot, and build your strength and your vertical...

Yep yep - everyone is different. I guess its the same old Bell curve thing. You get extremes and something in the middle.
Your right Bfold I didn't mean not to eat hardly anything extra.

I just prefer to "trickle" my extra calories in strategic places, morning, before and after training. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a lean dude, not at 12% BF :)

But I'm not getting fatter which is important to me. Who knows I may end up getting ripped if I gain muscle while eating to same amount ;)

Thanks for congrats - I hope to power clean 405 one day :)

I think that most guys in the gyms I've trained in are between the 15-25% range. So, bulking is something that obviously most go a little overboard with. There is no need to worry about that in powerlifting and WSM training etc, but in bodybuilding, if you are natural, I think it's important to keep BF%'s lower, as I mentioned in the other thread.
