I used to concentrate my practice in bankruptcy, so lots of my clients had tried both credit counseling services ( which basically are a glorified bill paying service) and the credit repair services. Out of hundreds of clients, not one ever told me that they received any benefits from using these services, sadly.

here is another tip about credit repair scams...

DO NOT PAY THEM ANY MONIES UNTIL THE SERVICE IS COMPLETE!!!

I have taken a shit load of classes and this was one of the things they said about a million times. If the company is good, they will not charge you until they have repaired your credit.

BE CAREFUL!!! also, even though an item is removed, it can be assigned to a different collection agency, etc...and then re-reported on your credit file

There really is not much these services can do that you cannot do yourself. If you have legitimate debts they cannot remove them. The most they can do is monitor your report regularly and remove items that are inaccurate or past the time limit. You can do that yourself but most people don't.

BK is honestly better. There are plenty of lenders that will finance 100% on home loans a day out of BK as long as the score is where it should be and a home wasn't included in the BK. You'll pay non-prime rates for at least 3 years, and if you have a late on anything after a BK, you won't be eligible for fannie/ freddy financing for 7 more years. Car loans can be in the 30% range though.

I have done my own credit repair and I was able to get lots of things taken off of my credit file.

I filed for bk in 1999 and the only thing that shows up in my credit file about my bk is the actual public record for the bk...nothing else. I disputed everything and it was all removed from my file. You can do it yourself and it is FREE!!!!

easier said than done sunshine. You don't just write a letter saying 'take this off my report' and boom, it's gone. It's become more complicated now and the cr industry has become better at trying to keep derogatory information on. The Fico system is pretty complex.

Actually it is pretty easy to do. If you or anyone else needs, I have a credit repair kit that I can send to you. I don't have it with me here at work but I can bring it with me tomorrow. Shoot me some e-mail addys and I will be more than happy to send it to you!

i'll bite. But remembre, not everyone has this kit you have, nor the time to do everything. Plus many get bad advice. The internet is full of bad, confusing information.

I agree with you there. It does take a lil time but think of the time we spend daily on EF. lol
