Idiots that own pitbulls

You pit bull lovers have poor logic saying that "all dogs can attack", it's not just pits and rottweilers. The Center for Disease Control did a study of fatal dog attacks from 1979-1997(I think these were the years, the study is on their website). The results showed that pits and rotts (counting mixed breeds ie. part pit bull) were responsible for about 60% of dog attack fatalities. Now compare that 60% figure to the dog population. What percent of the dog population is made up of pits and rotts? I don't have an answer but let's say that it's 10% (which I'm confident is way, way too high). Even if we take an exaggerated figure, you have 10% of the dog population being responsible for 60% of the fatalities.

Of course some pit bulls can be trained to be gentle. However every animal (including humans) has a breaking point where they will fight for their life if they think they are in danger. Nobody, even the most responsible dog owner, can predict what might set a dog off. If it perceives a child as a threat, it may very well attack. Any dog could attack. The difference with pits and rotts is they are huge powerful animals that can do a lot of damage. A child doesn't have a chance against an 80 pound pit bull. Hell, an adult male attacked by such a dog would be fortunate to fight it off. In the case cited in this thread, the 2 year old girl's mother tried to fight the dog but the dog damn near took her arm off.

I just don't see the purpose of bringing such animals into areas inhabited by humans. There's a reason people don't keep pet gorillas, alligators (adults anway), lions, and tigers, etc. They just are not suited as domestic animals.

A 120 pound mountain lion or leopard, bottle-fed from infancy, would make a fine pet too.

And if any problems arise, it's just the fault of the owners or breeders...

That's not true. My father experimented in length with trying to domesticate wild and great cats when he was younger but he never got them to get potty trained or stop eating neighbourhood housecats, so he had to give up.

I don't suggest banning pitbulls but I'll tell you this much, people who keep them have in my experience 100% of the time been morons. For one thing they have entirely no style, those dogs are ugly as shit, they aren't exactly house or yard decoration.

My next door neighbor has a pit. She is probably the most gentle, friendly dog I have ever. All she wants to do is play and be pet.

The problem is with irresponsible owners who don't realize the work and attention some animals need. One more thing, it isn't a redneck problem either. I am surrounded by them and they by and far are much better and more responsible with their animals than most people.

12 year old boy killed by the family pit bulls today in San Fran.

8:58 p.m. -- A 12-year-old boy was mauled to death by his family's two pit bulls this afternoon in his apartment in San Francisco's Inner Sunset District as his mother screamed helplessly.

The boy, identified by school district officials as Nicholas Scott Faibish, was in his apartment at 711 Lincoln Way when the 80-pound dogs - a male named Rex and a female named Ella - attacked him at about 3:15 p.m., authorities said.

"Get them out of here!'' the boy's mother screamed, according to a neighbor in the building who heard the attack and saw the woman moments later, covered with blood.

A police officer shot and killed one of the dogs, believed to be Ella, when the dog prevented him from entering the apartment, a police spokesman said. The other dog was captured inside the apartment and was being held by animal control officers.

Paramedics tried and failed to resuscitate the boy.

Shocked neighbors said the dogs were normally friendly, affectionate and well-behaved.

"The dogs were sweethearts,'' said Art Austin, who has lived in the building for five years. "I never thought they were vicious. They were really nice. I would pet them and my wife would kiss them on the forehead.''

Its all in how they are raised and treated. My brother has a pitbull/boxer mix and its very friendly and great with kids. It can play pretty rough sometimes tho.

I think this family of dogs are literally a breed apart. They seem like friendly giants until something sparks & they turn into killers. They just can't be 100% trusted. & if an accident happens it is quite often fatal, especially to our young, who we should be protecting at all costs.

LMAO at the dumbasses that are defending these dogs. Yeah, the assholes that owned these dogs thought they were real "sweet hearts". Grizzly bears are sweet hearts too until something frightens them.

Yeah, it's funny how everyone accepts that different breeds of dogs have certain personality traits, but they can't accept that the hair trigger is one of the traits that has been bred into the Pit Bull.

I've known plenty of non aggressive pitbulls... just because some are bred to be aggressive doesn't mean they are all fucked up.
Do you really want to take the chance with your kids, that this one, or that one won't snap?
