I will be getting a masters degree in accounting next year and am scoping out job opportunities. I will be 33 when I get out of school, no wife, no kids, nothing to keep me in one place so I can pick up and leave easily. Im interested in government jobs of some sort such as City of NY, Federal jobs, etc. I would like starting pay around $50k, which, in Austin TX goes a long way for a single guy so if anyone knows what the equivalent for NYC would be let me know what I am in for.
I will say Ive been in Texas all my life and just need a big change so everyone let me know the best way to go about moving to NYC as far as apartments, jobs, life, culture transition (Im Texan big time) etc. I have visited NYC for a week over the summer and it was very appealing.

50K in NYC wont likely get you far. would you settle for the surrounding area at all?
Yea, jersey or Long island or something. those are the only two i can think of off the top of my head. Nothing more than a half hour from NYC preferably.

He is asking about the NY EQUIVALENT to what $50K would do in Texas.

Jeez, reading comprehension around here just keeps getting worse.

Cost of living is slightly more than double and housing - maybe 3-4 times more.
In NYC a good equal would be 125k per year - 100k bare minimum.

Also keep in mind little fish big sea - your competition regardless of ability will be high (that goes for anyone).

Oh and one more thing - Uncle Sam is going to take a much larger chunk of your check then you might be used to.

Good Luck!
