here's something to think about: the price of a NYC apartment is somewhere around $1000 a square foot.
to rent, you'd have to find something on the outskirts of manhattan (if you want to live RIGHT in the city, although you could easily live in brooklyn, queens, or hoboken for much less) and pay close to $2000 a month for a very small studio. $50k won't cut that, obviously.
you could, however, live and work in the surrounding area, plan on making around $75k, and live relatively comfortably.
