Before1990 when our legislators in their imminently short sighted wisdom implemented the anabolic steroid control act which took AAS Anabolic / Androgenic steroids out of doctor’s hands and effectively created the internet black market for steroids. Thanks for making it easy for our computer savvy youth to trick a source who would not sell to a kid if they knew.(steroid users/suppliers are generally law abiding hard working people)We now have a new billion dollar a year drug market! Good job on thinking things through our esteemed law makers.

Hey Quad, excellent letter and boy do I remember the big steroid scare in the mid to late 80's. Remember Walter Jekot, MD? He was awesome back int he day! Congress has wasted so much time and money on this issue. All it has done is ballooned the black market which could be a problem with quality control-etc. Also, as you stated some kids could dupe a source. Bottom line moving steroids into the same class as cocaine, heroin and a sundry of other hardcore rec drugs was a foolish move. I shake my head...

Thanks man. I am just pissed about how shitty our country has become. I want change damnit! and no one worth voting for anymore. agendas, budgets, special interests, payoffs, propagada, biased media, bullshit gas prices (lets build some refineries...1970 was the last new one.) I rant!

Q
I don't believe the country is shitty. Of course things can alway be improved and I believe that is slowly turning. Additionally, there is no other place I would rather call home then the USA, as I am sure you would concur.

The refineries are a problem. The environmentalists and thier special interest groups have choked supply. We had over 300 refineries back in the 70's. Now it is half of that and with consumption as it is today we are now dealing with a lack of supply. I agree start building refineries but refinery companies having to spend precious capital on desulfurization for current plants to meet govt requirements by 06. Building is not going to happen anytime soon. Ya, there is a lot of lame shit out there but there is also a lot of good stuff.

Actually, if it wasn't for some of the environmentalists, then the country really would look like shit.

The Clinton years were good years, and that wasn't so long ago. The economy grew, we weren't in two major wars, non-sense constitutional amendments didn't stand a chance, and the so-called Moral Majority bullshit was held at bay. Today we're spending countless millions on abstinence programs? ha. How about just get rid of the sex drive while you're at it.

He's right, the country has gone downhill . . . mostly because of lame-ass politics brought on by our current leaders.

I mostly disagree but that's ok. I am all for making sound decisions for the environment but what has gone on is rediculous. Classic example is environmental lobbists trying to balk drilling in ANWR. www.anwr.org IMHO, this country does things very efficiently thru means of technology and is incredibly innovative, that gives us a comparative advantage over other countries.. What is it this decade? Global cooling? During the 90's it was global warming. It is my opinion that environmentalist (let me clarify the GREEN community) have done more bad then good for the country. Look at land restrictions in the 70's in Palo Alto or Southern California, that is one of the main variables to the highcost of RE in those regions. .

I feel your story on young girls using steroids was irresponsible and just another attempt by the media to sensationalize the steroid issue. I have been in the sport of bodybuilding for 25 years and have been competitive for 20 years; nationally for 8 years and I do not know of or ever heard of any middle school girl much less high school (although this I can see possibly on a small scale) I asked my step daughter about it and she looked at me like I was crazy and she is in middle school.
The scale of steroid use compared to ecstasy and cocaine and alcohol in minute and not an area that needs a lot of focus in our schools. Alcohol use is far more a threat and an immediate one. Crystal methadone and heroin is exploding among our youth. These are the problems. These drugs will kill you today; far worse than a slightly deeper voice and some hair on a girls lip!
Steroids by and large used in small doses are reasonably safe even with long term use. Lets look at the important issues…we have forgotten 9-11 for the most part. Our borders are lose and un-secure. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s comment was actually fairly accurate. We do need to close them and get a grip on this situation. The Hispanic communities threatening walk outs to sway politician’s decisions, should be allowed to go and be fired. That’s equal rights…I would be fired if I walked out of my job. Gov. Schwarzenegger should be most upset as he went through the proper channels and took the test to be here. Why should anyone else be different? That’s just one issue that needs covering.
I am sure you can think of more yourself. Taking one study and reporting it without any further research into the subject is irresponsible journalism in my humble opinion. If I were to go around and ask the same question and got an opposite report would you run it? I doubt it because it’s not “SENSATIONAL” it’s just the facts, the truth. Something many people I believe are desperately trying to find.

Sincerely,

Rediculous stuff. I want to see the fucking statistics that produced this:

Overall, up to about 5 percent of high school girls and 7 percent of middle-school girls admit trying anabolic steroids at least once, with use of rising steadily since 1991, various government and university studies have shown.

What exactly does "up to 5%" or "up to 7%" mean here? Maybe a really small sample size. Maybe some doofus kid answering yes for the hell of it. I mean, I can't imagine you walk into the 6th grade and 1 in every 20 girls (less than the 7% printed for middle school) is juicing. What the fuck.

I don't see any source attributed directly to the percentages. I see the "various government and university studies" but this seems to indicate more of the increasing use since 1991 and not the percents. I want to know where they got that shit. I want a source where those numbers were pulled from and I want to understand the data and method because if these are the numbers they came out with, it's flawed in a major way.

Plus anybody that knows statistics is going to be hugely fucking leary of any phase like "up to 5%". What does that mean that it's not significantly different from 0 but if we claimed 6% that would be over the 95% confidence limit so we instead say "up to 5%". Shit, we could as easily say "as low as -5% of high school girls." I'm betting something along these lines is what produced those bullshit numbers. Totally irresponsible and an example of how statistical results can be presented so that they sound much different than what they mean.

Also have the factor that most of these young kids dont really even know what steroids are. Half of them probably think that creatine is a steroid, or even using amino acid tabs! LOL
