It was extremely heartbreaking he was my little boy. A very cute little shetland sheepdog that unfortunately suffered from seizures and one episode made him "gone".

Anyway, I got the bill today from the veterinarian - the day it happened she said to go home and not think about the bill. I always thought it would come but two weeks later when I never saw it I figured she let me off since I was there 1 week earlier and spent $180 trying for new treatment.

I know its a business, thats her livelihood, but if I was a veterinarian I wouldnt charge for having to put down a dog, I mean if your heart was in it to become a vet wouldnt it make sense that it would be the "right" thing to do without charging someone? I gladly accept the cremation charge but the euthanasia charge is immoral to me?

im rambling -sorry, i miss him.

Sorry to hear. How much is the part you are concerned about?

some vets are heartlerss, I had a vet for many years, he knew all my dogs and he milked me real good cuz I had severral great danes, once day returning home with hubby around 2a.m. we saw a sick potentially dying dog about 3 blocks from home and we didnt have the heart to leave him agonizing in a puddle of his saliva, we picked him up, called the vet for an emergency consult, he agreed to meet us (he lives next to his practice) we got in he took his vitals, barely looked at him, said he was poisoned and had to be put down, euthanized it, put it in a plastic bag, handed it back and charges $130 which by Costa Rica Standards is BEYOND abusive, he also knew it was not our dog and we were just trying to do the right thing by a poor animal, it was late but it's no like he had to drive or anything, he immediately stopped being our vet, I never liked him but my husband did....

if he found a dying wireless LAN controller in the street and called you, would you fix it for free?

I mean if your heart was in it to become a vet

People train to become vets to make money and better their own lives, same reason as doctors, dentists, lawyers or any profession. The cold, harsh reality is that giving out freebies doesn't help you go along.

If she had given you the bill at the time you had your dog put down you probably wouldn't be so upset. What's going on is receiving the bill one month later is sort of opening up the scab on an emotional wound for you.

But you should remember, it's probably nothing personal. Many businesses bill on a monthly basis.

Just like all other fields, there are good vets and bad vets. Some of the best end up washing out of the field because the pet owners are miserable to deal with. It's easier to be a human doctor, honestly. Your patient's tell you what's wrong and, interestingly enough, people rarely squawk about paying an exorbitant doctor's bill, even if the result is a dead patient.

Sorry about your dog pogo, they are part of the family and it hurts a lot to let them go. I like to think that my past dogs are still around in spirit, and that I'll meet them again when the day comes.

I never expect people to do things for free, but I frown upon those that ass rape to take advantage of the circumstances when all people are trying to do is be good people, kinda takes away the desire to help out...
