how are granola bars as a carb source?

i usually have oatmeal, brown rice, wheat bread, and carbs from milk for carbs but i dont have any other real low gi carbs laying around at my house, though i always have nature valley granola bars (the healthier kind). how do they rate on the glycemic index scale, they are a real convenient souce of 45 carbs so how are they for u, ok?
 
Nope. Granola, in itself, is fine. But granola bars have a tone of sugar in them. Sugar probably accounts for half the carbs in a granola bar.
 
like mildot said what if it is only 11 grams of sugar in 45 grams of carbs, does that mean they are fine since most is from granola?

There is a HUGE difference between simple carbs (sugar) and complex carbs (bread, rice, pasta, etc.) And among complex carbs there are high GI (Glycemic Index) carbs and low GI carbs, low GI being preferrable to bbs.

The point is, that 11 gr of sugar will account for more than half of the granola bar's carb content, not just 11 grams. If you were to eat 45 grams worth of plain granola for example, that would be fine as long as it fit into your diet. The problem is, without all that sugar, it'd probably taste like dirt.

110 - do some reading up on carbs and the glycemic index. Very important diet stuff.
 
Sure. They have sugar. So do carrots and salad and fruit and most breads. Of course the granola's sugar will be slighter higher on the Glycemic Index, but, one will not fucking kill you or your diet. If you are going to eat them all the time, or just have a craving for one, eat them in the morning with breakfast or do it pre workout (if it's a huge deal to have a tiny bit of sugar).

Just don't eat a crate of them... you know? Moderation.

I agree with the point on moderation, however I think you're missing the point about sugar. Granola in it of itself has sugar, yes, but granola BARS have even more sugar. I think you can get some regular granola and just have that instead of the bar.
 
Bro I used to eat whole wheat bread thinking it was low GI...but most whole wheats are enriched just like white bread.

Try to find "whole grain" whole wheat and check the ingredients and make sure it doesn't say enriched.

Man, that sucks. I didn't know that. I've been eating "12 grain" bread for some time now. I thought it was low gi. But it says "enriched flour" on the ingredients. Might as well have been eating french bread all this time. :mad:

Doesn't that piss you off? Luckily I had a nutritionist friend who warned me about that. Wheat bread is supposed to be healthy, then these companies turn it around and make it just as bad as white bread.
 
Great info guys, good to know. Are we better off with whole wheat bread from bakery sections? I have been eating the "Heath Nut" which I thought would have EFA, prot., and low GI, any input on that one?
 
you can eat whole grain brea from the super market just make sure the 1st ingredient isnt enriched whole wheat flour. if it says enriched u dont want it bc its the same shit as white bread. Ive been eating arnold's whole wheat bread its 70 cal a slice with 12 carbs and 2g fiber a slice
