Strange, but correct. I'm completely hopeless with squats.
And regarding doing deadlifts with a bad back: Maybe you should try doing it sumo style as that puts almost all of the weight on the legs, the back being vertical all the time. And you could start doing it with only the bar, to be sure not to do any harm to an already weak back.
If that works, it's a good way to make your back stronger and then you can always add weight later when you feel ready for it.
