Guys who've proposed how much did you spend on a ring?

I was a freshman in college when I bought the engagement ring for my old lady. It was a 3/4c center stone with another 3/4c worth of baggets on the sides (three little ones on each side). My wife has allergic reactions to both gold and silver, so I basically had to go platinum. With the wedding band the total cost was $6,300.00. I didn't pay that though. I ended up only paying about $3,500.00 for it. I got a student discount on it (jewelry store was on campus) and I also got a family discount. My parents and grandparents and her parents and grandparents all bought their rings from this store. So I got a really good deal on it.

Here is how I see it....you buy what you can afford. I love to see women who have a ton of money with small diamond rings. It shows where you were when you started off as a couple. It means more than a huge diamond or a large payment. It is what the ring symbols and means

I spent about $1,200 on my wifes first ring it was a half caratt with above average stats. On our 10th anniversary I got her 1 carat from a diamond wholesaler fro 2k that is probably worth 4 or 5. She better be happy with that one because that is last time I spend that much money on a piece of hardened coal that looks like glass. Diamonds are stupid imo. Emeralds are pretty though.

seems spending two months salary is the established target. That's alot of cash though.

The ring has become a symbol of the man's wealth and power. After all that is what chemically drives a women, her need to find a man worth raising her young. In barbarian times women were chemically structured to find a man who was large and healthy, this is why modern day women find men with large shoulders attractive. aka. Why men’s suits include shoulder pads, it emulates power.

But in the modern day industrial society in which machines now do the majority of heavy work, and women can buy food at the local store; men are now judged on how wealthy they will become. This has lead to the superficial nature of women, and an increase in divorce in America. Women no longer judge men on his character or the kindness of his heart, they judge him on his bankroll. So in the case of an engagement ring it summarizes his potential to provide for her in the future. This is why women show off the ring, they think "ohhh he spent 20k damn this man is your meal ticket." Catty yes, but that is the reality of American marriage today. And keep in mind 67 percent of people divorce in America so that ring really in a poor barometer of true happiness.

cut & paste?

I spent $2,000 and put it on a credit card from the jewelry store in which we both paid on. We don't make that much money and the ring I gave her was perfect in her eyes

sounds like you need some help from a woman. when i was engaged before, we went and picked out ring together. it was 2ct total weight on platinum band. hand a 1ct center stone and 1/2 ct stones on either side. he only paid like 2k for it since he paid cash. you will get a better quality diamond and a much wallet-friendly price if you go to a diamond wholesaler. they can mount it and everything for you. usually they won't charge for the band. or may even give a nice discount on wedding band for her and yourself. good luck man.

You really need to be careful with these people. They sometimes change stones when they set them. It's a big scam.

I have a personal jeweler and went the same route as GL did.

That is just made up bullshit from the diamond industry. 2 months pay for a piece of glass they can kiss my ass.

i gave $625 at a pawn shop. almost single 1/2 carat stone, i think it was an s1? (i knew the owner very well) set in an original ring setting. it looked kinda like a gold flower with a diamond in teh middle. haven't seen anything as simple and original since either
