Got a cortisone shot in the knee yesterday

swole

Well-known member
For 5 months I've haven't been able to run full speed, stretch 100% or put all my weight on my right knee without it feeling like something is pulling/tearing/hurting very badly.

So I visit the ortho. They bend and flex it in all these directions, take X-Rays and determine it might be something under the bottom of my knee cap rubbing up against some soft tissue causing inflammation. No major ligament tear or anything.

So the bitch shot me up with 10cc of cortisone and while that stuff takes 7-10 days to reach full potential, a day later and I'm running nearly 100% again and so pumped, because now I can work my legs hardcore again and join up my football leagues.

The shot felt cool too. Anyone else ever get one of these?

got one in the thumb. The shot hurt like a mofo. Felt like he was grinding my bone with the needle. Shit was a miracle for pain and movement though. Highly recommended!!!

Swole!

do not workout harder

just 'coast' with a fixed amount of jogging and leg workouts

let the hard and soft tissue strengthen

deca?? :D

but honestly i'm not gonna put that much stress on it, meaning no hack squats or lunges for me. just some light squats and leg extensions, which are honestly all i need for big ass quads

i just love being able to run full speed again, which allows me to stay active without restriction

Absolutely!!

I got one in my hip two months ago. That shit is no joke when you are getting injected but it does work. I need hip surgery but the type I need is considered experimental by my insurance company and they wont fucking pay for it. I am pissed.

I used to get cortisone shots in my knees.

Be careful here. It's possible to inflame a joint or soft tissue so much that everyday use perpetuates the inflammation. It becomes a vicious cycle where you simply can't rest it enough to get it settled down.

Enter the cortisone shot. It's perfect for these situations. Get the shot, and rest the injury like its hurting as much as ever. It will break the cycle of inflammation and you've got excellent chances of a full recovery.

Enter abuse of the cortisone shot. You feel better as soon as 1-2 days, so you resume the same activities that led to the inflammation in the first place. About 3-4 weeks after the shot, that small twinge of pain reappears. Then over the next 2-3 weeks, the pain is back stronger than ever. You go to the doctor and get another cortisone shot, but notice this one doesn't work quite as well as the last one did. Rinse, repeat and you'll be on your 10th shot with a joint or soft tissue that's more damaged than ever.

Cliffs Notes: Even if you've gotten your shot and are pain-free, lay off the injury as if it was still in excruciating pain. Cortisone shots are living on borrowed time.

Never, I have lived with chronic nerve and back pain since 2000
I prefer meds

you old people might think about synvisc

I was about to recommend that to my father and law who is looking to buy some time before a knee replacement. His degeneration is advanced so while he gets swelling and limited range of motion, he doesn't experience very much pain. I'm guessing it's neuropathy from a combination of being 15+ years overdue for replacement combined with borderline diabetes. What do you think about him having little or no pain? That can't be a good sign.

I started asking around and there are some studies coming out that show the viscoelastic materials aren't any more effective than cortisone shots. I'm going to look into an osteoarthritic brace for him. Would a partial unloading of the knee really get anything done though? That's another thing I need to look into -- he's wanting to buy as much time as possible.

synvisc works for some, doesnt for others, but its not a replacement for arthroplasty, just puts it off. Sounds like he could have used it 10 yrs ago.

Sounds frivolous, but he's trying to get past UT basketball season. His last replacement was nightmareish, so he's terribly gunshy.

I had a knee drained by needle, and they put a mixture of fake joint fluid and/or maybe cortisone, and lidocaine in to replace the fluid they pulled out... That did hurt, but as with yours, it was worth it! What I hated about it more than any other injection, is that he had to jab and stab around in my knee for what seemed like an hour, althoug it was probably about 90 seconds to suck out the knee fluid, and another 30 seconds to push in the new liquid. BIG needle too. That was a long time ago, and it may have had cortisone in the shot. Can't remember. I have a problem with my right shoulder now, and I'm thinking that if I go to the doctor, a huge needle will be produced.
