Girlfriend and I own a house together, now we're breaking up

She's pulling some petty shit too. She grabbed all the hard drives from my computer and will not return them. I even called the cops on her and she claimed that they were half hers - the cop said there's nothing he can do about it. She told the cop there was "illegal" stuff on there - whatever that means. Programs, mp3s etc...

What kind of recourse do I have for this? I could probably prove I bought at least 3 out of the 4 of them.

Selling the house is going to be a fucked up situation. I put the 20% down on the house and want it back. Arizona doesnt have any common law marriage clauses so that wouldnt work. I think I'll get the money I put down no problem - but now she's holding shit hostage like this and there's not shit I can do. I am not going to get physical - that would F my chances of anything behind a judge.

I am speaking with an attorney tomorrow. Anyone have experiences like this? How did they turn out?

I'd write off the hard drives, change the locks and let your attorney communicate with her going forward...

You could probably take her to small claims court or something if you really want the $$ back for the hard drives if you can prove you purchased them....

Happened to a bud of mine too. House was in her name, they split and he's still making payments on it. Neither live there anymore and have to sell it now. Oh well.

If the hard drives are half hers and she claims theres illegal stuff on them she's fucking herself. You could just say it's her illegal stuff. She's gonna get nowhere with that angle. I might even threaten to call the cops myself now that the illegal stuff is in her possession.
