Flaxseed oil is poorly converted to EPA and and particularly DHA. Wikipedia says "15 grams of flaxseed oil provides ca. 8 grams of ALA, which is converted in the body to EPA and then DHA at an efficiency of (2%-15%), and (2%-5%) respectively." That's not good - in total that means your getting between 0.32 to 1.6 net omega 3's, or between the equivalent of 1/2 to less than 3 double strength fish oil tablets, at a cost of just 0.5 to 3 grams of fat!

Conversion depends on your genetics and diet (sat fat, omega 6, sugar, reducing conversion)

Given this is mind, tablets are not the way to go with flaxseed oil. You need heaps of flaxseed oil (15+) if your relying on it for your omega 3's. Indeed, I wouldn't rely on flax

My personal preference is to eat salmon, alternatively use double strength fish oil tablets, and use flaxseeds in shakes, or in meals, given flaxseeds are perhaps the most nutritious seed/nut in terms of vitamins and minerals. They are a valuable source of many minerals/vitamins (per nutritiondata.com: "good source of Magnesium, Phosphorus and Copper, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Thiamin and Manganese"). My only concerns are lignans - don't know if they're good or bad.

I'm not suggesting not to use the oil - it is still good for you - just be aware of its potentially poor conversion rate. The oil I just use to make up calories if needed. I have no idea whether the ALA that doesn't convert is healthier than monounsaturated fat. Anyone?
