First cardio work out

I finally got enough money to join the gym and yesterday I got on the eucalyptus machine. I was able to stay on it for 10 minutes, then took a 2-3 minute break and got back on for 7 minutes, took a 2-3 minute break and was on it for 5 more minutes. I was about to die. I drank a shake immediately after I was done. I am not going to be able to lift weights until I get some endurance built up :rolleyes: . I really need to burn fat, so did that shake hurt me by adding calories to my diet?
Also, I have been eating a lot of fiber and protein (which I have not ever done) and I am just as hungry as always, and not lost a single pound. It isn't helping.

First of "eucalyptus" is a plant: see here

The Elliptical machine, as I will assume is what you used is a great machine.

What was in the shake you drank? And if you drank, as in slugged it down... not a good idea... better to sip on for 30 minute period or so. It's hard for me too cuz i like to just chug it and be done... but i've read that it can be utilized better if slowly administered.
 
Oh... and if you're still hungry as you say. Try some ANPB (all natural peanut butter) 1 tablespoon for a "snack" to hold you over, it should suffice... or maybe 2 table spoons. Depends on your height/weight.. BMR, ect.

How many calories are you taking in over the course of a day?
 
I would suggest start training with weights now if you could. Weight training can increase cardiovascular endurance just as good if not better than cardio. Start off slow. One or two exercises per muscle groups, 2-3 sets each. Have you changed anything in your diet? Fiber one cerial instead of cherrios is more filling for a mid morning snack. (LOL. I think that was you that mentioned the cherrios) Veggies, high water intake. I only drink one protein shake when I'm dieting. The bulk of my calories come from whole foods. Shakes are processed quickly and can leave you hungry in no time. You mentioned your stats before, which really aren't bad at all. Adding some muscle to your body will make you a better overall "fat burner" throughout the day.
 
post cardio, id wait 30 minutes up to an hour to eat anything. you are still burning fat post cardio and since this is your goal, id try to hold off eating for a little while. id also eat a regular meat after a cardio only routine. if you want, you can do some weights before you hit the cardio and then drink a shake afterwards.
 
Hi Alex, I am the cherios person lol. I quit doing that because it wasn't working. I switched to eating nothing in the morning (because I'm not hungry until lunch). I eat a salad with tuna on it and about 2 tablespoons of light ranch dressing, or I eat a peanut-butter sandwich. At dinner time I eat what ever is I make. If it has high fat or carbs, I try to limit my intake. the other day I made porkroast and navy beans which is high in fiber and protein and I couldn't get full off of a normal serving.
I am testing out certain diets that I have been hearing about, and so far nothing has worked. No matter what I eat or how I consume it through out the day I am still hungry. So I will keep trying diffent things until something works (I guess)

I'm not drinking a shake after I do cardio anymore.

My stats are now:
38 years old
5'7"
140, I gained 2 more pounds
 
Thought that was you with the cheerios. LOL. If you can tolerate giving up carbs for 6 days a week, you might want to try the anabolic diet out for a while. (Like Atkins only with a carb up day on the weekend or any other day during the week) High protein and fat with a maximum of 20 grams of carbs during the day. You can still get your veggies and fiber in there as well. Great for someone who only has 10-15 lbs. of fat to lose. You'll never get hungry during the day on this diet.

And if the "eucalyptus machine" is too hard for now, go on the treadmill and work up to a comfortable speed starting slowly and increasing the speed and duration of your workout. And definitely start doing weights as soon as you can. If you've never trained with weights before you'll see great results really fast. Adding some muscle to your frame really makes the whole body look better and more symetrical.
 
I don't think I can give up carbs for-ever. I tried the atkins diet twice and the first time I threw up at the end of the day. The second time, I felt so sick to my stomach toward the latter part of the day. A lot of protien with carbs causes bad indegestion as it is. I can give it a try again with 20 grams of carbs and see what happens. I don't think I could do that forever though.
I have to do the eucalyptus machine because I have bad feet and knees from not training properly when I was younger. Just from doing two 25 minute work-outs on the eucalyptus machine in the past 3 days, I feel like I have needles poking me in the knees. If I got on a tredmill or stair stepper, I wouldn't be able to walk before long.
Anyway, I will try the 20 grams of carb, Anabolic diet, and see what happens. Thanks for the info

May I ask why are you so concerned about your carb intake?

Have you tried eating 5-6 small meals a day, with adequate healthy fats and the correct carbs?

Like Pintoca says, No amount of cardio can make up for a poor diet. You need to EAT to lose weight.

I use to be a cardio bunny, then decided to actually lift some 'weight' for once ... my results speak for themselves.

Have you been over to the Women's Forum? You can get great suggestions for sample diets & training routines for beginners :)

Ok friends, thank you so much for all of your input (I appreciate it). I am going to try this on my own until I find out what works for me. Nothing has seemed to work so far. I have worked out 3 times this week and my knees are swollen so bad I can barely walk today. I'm out of here for awile, so take care of yourself.

I would really HATE to see you quit before even starting. You've tried all these diets & look where they've gotten you, ~2lbs heavier and feeling like a failure.

Few things,

Based on some on your posts, and I'm going off No salient medical concerns here, I gather you are not (or were not) eating enough. You need to be consuming at least 10 x your bodyweight ... if you weight 140 = 1400 cals a DAY spread out over 5-6 meals, with GOOD carbs, GOOD fats and quality Protein. If you have problems with meals & eating alot of meat, get a good protein shake as a meal substitute, but eat often, every 3 hours. Get that metabolism running as it should be. Your body is holding on to everything you're eating b/c it's NOT enough ... so what better to store for the starvation it thinks you're putting it through than FAT ... in the meantime, it will happily eat up any muscle you do have.

You need to lift some weight. Not pink Dumbbells or light rack at the gym for 20 reps not allowing you to break a sweat. 8-12 reps of a weight that will make that last rep difficult, while not cheating or breaking your form. You will NOT get 'big' unless you're using drugs to make you that way ... it's simply not in your cards & genetics. What have you been doing to make your knees swell??

There is no quick fix that is healthy for YOU. This is a lifestyle change. One I think you will benefit & be happy from. Yo-yo dieting will not work, you need to learn to eat, to lift and you CAN have alife while doing and enjoying the foods you love to eat... in 'moderation' ...

Please don't give up.
 
I havn't completely given up. I am just frustrated because if I consume 1400 calories I will be hungry. If I eat meat all day it will make me sick (atkins diet type thing) What needs to happen is this: I have to quit over eating. I have been trying to do this my whole life. I will go on binges and then not eat very much at all for a couple of days. It has always worked for me. Now nothing does. I can't even work out on the cardio machine because my knees are swollen today ( I have worked out 3 times in the last week). I planned on swimming laps as a last resort, due to my knee and feet problem. Well that is what I will be doing tonight, and it is time consuming getting dressed and undressed etc in the freezing cold. I am sorry, just frustrated. I don't want to stay here another month and complain about everything and piss everyone off.

LOL. You're not pissing anyone off here. Everyone on this site wants to see anyone who has questions reach their goals in as little time as possible. Don't feel sorry for anything. You have good questions and normal weight problems that I'm sure other people have in common with you. A lot of knowledgeable people on here are more than willing to help you out.
