Fighting Tips for someone who has no martail art training

Hey everyone, I have no martial art training (as yet anyway....). Can all you experienced fighters give me some practical tips for defending myself if i was to get into a street fight? Thanks

Learn how to box and learn how to wrestle. Never wrestle in a bar fight, since you don't want to be on the ground and have 2 of the other guys friends start to kick you while you are down. Pretty simple, but that is my opinion.

Like the guy before me said but as always try to avoid the fight if at all possible, and if you are in a street fight its anything goes you have to assume the guy wants to kill you.
A well place strike to the throat or adams apple, a blow to the nose or temple can help to stun your assailant. What ever you do dont stop fighting.

If there are no other options try to gouge the eyes or go for the groin.

Now that is my opinion.
With that being said my tips are more self defense. If you are a trained fighter you might have a chance to actually fight an attacker other wise you want to try and stun or disable them and get away.

That is a good post. As is this one:

Yeah i'd say punch them in the neck, or hit them in the jaw/nose then run, less fighting, the better

Wow punching to throat, weapons? You guys fight cheap and dirty, and thats how people get seriously hurt. I'm from a town small enough that everyone pretty much knows everyone. Nothing worse than fighting cheap and dirty than having to watch your back.

If your in a fight you can't avoid, there is probably a good reason why. But the chances of being in this situation is slim to none if your not being a dickhead.

If you do have a fight, make sure you have enough buddies around. I have been on the out number end of things a few times. It sucks.

Pull your self close into the person and less chances of getting hit in the face. Than just hold on for the ride and try to trip the person with a simple leg sweep.

When you do have mma training and get into a fight, your hands are considered a weapon if the other person ever presses charges.

After many broken hands, noses, black eyes street fight is over rated. If a person is really tough and they know it they aren't out fighting to prove it.

It don't matter if you are Bruce Lee, a time will come along, when someone will want to harm you phyisically. Some situations cannot simply be avoided. Sometimes an altarcation takes place out of pure defense. When drugs, drinking, people in packs, and weapons are involved you'll pay a big price without fighting back....from where I come from anyway.

Hey man, for a start, I am not a bad guy, and don't look for trouble, but if I am forced into it, then I will stop at nothing. Cheap and dirty? No, but that is how I like my women.

Sorry, but assholes don't need reasons, most of the time. just give them alcohol and they wait for a nice guy to fall into their paranoia, and wham! life is sick like that. If he is drunk and has a woman, then he will no doubt believe you are humping her alrady. women and wars...

ok, so I need to have a posse, before getting into trouble... like I have said, and seen, you don't square off like in westerns. you may be taking a piss in the toilet. violence can happen everwhere, especially when you least expect it. there is seldom safety in numbers.

Pull your self close into the person and less chances of getting hit in the face. Than just hold on for the ride and try to trip the person with a simple leg sweep.
And then what? fall to the ground with him? but what if he read your advice and has mates with him? oh yeah, you have you mates too. too messy. outside the ring, it has great risk. Going in close is perfect, but you must damage him there, with close range options; elbows, forearms, upper cuts etc

When you do have mma training and get into a fight, your hands are considered a weapon if the other person ever presses charges.
bullshit.

then you understand the need for violence against violence. not gentleman vs beast

When you are in trouble, you don't play nice, you aim to get away as soon as you can, not fuck around fighting dojo styles.

I have trained in traditional styles, but put faith in the principles that work, outside of training 'techniques'. the aim is to reduce your harm, while maximisimg theirs, and fast.

nothing heroic, just get it done, and be violent, if they are out to injure you. it doesnt always work as planned, but screw being defensive. be offensive.

Laws here in canada if you have any training its considered a assault with a weapon.

I no longer drink so the whole being around drunks doesn't involve me.

When I did go out to bars/pubs what not to get drunk. I always went with a group of people. Its more fun with a bunch of buddies plus you don't have to worry as much.

I live in a town of 75,000 so everyone pretty much knows everyone so I guess thats why I didn't worry about fighting as much.

If you look at what the op posted he asked for tips on defending himself.

Those are many moves taught by self defense teachers. Teaching him to fight is completley different. Im a fighter and a marine so I in no way go out to start fights and dont want to fight in the street too many things can go wrong.

Really good advice would be for you to train.

you won't learn how to throw a good punch on the internet because things change once you get punched back....you need to learn how to deal with strikes, wrestling, etc for a period of time. a couple of sentences on the net about punching someone might get you knocked the fuck out in a real life encounter.

These days, flight is the only real option.. Weapons are simply too common, and once testosterone starts flying all rules go out the window.

Groundfighting/takedowns are next-to useless in a streetfight, so are big flowery techniques (including haymakers etc), and kicks should be restricted to waist-down ares only. If you are cornered and simply must fight your way out, keep the techniques as short and simple as possible, and manouver yourself into a position that you can escape. Keep your cool, you will get hit, possibly worse, you may end up looking like a "wimp", but at least you're alive, hopefully uninjured, and not headed to prison.

Wing chun (if you can find a good instructor) is a good starting point, simple and fast. Remember there are no rules on the street, so kneeing a guy in the balls, or stomping on someone's foot (foot bones are easily crushed, and cause intense pain) or making them eat an ashtray is all smart if the situation arises. use surfaces to your advantage (slippery floors or broken glass can really mess up a kickboxer)

If you're faced with multiple assailants, try to manipulate your positioning so that you're using one guy to sheild you from the others. This way you only have to worry about attacks from one spot, and you hopefully won't end up feeling a knife in your back.

But first and foremost, get out! To live and learn is way better than the alternative.

without any training at all best thing can say if you don't back off is you be the more aggressive, once the fight starts throwing fast and hard punches while going forward, many big mouths who start fight's get a shock when other guy turns the aggressor and once on back foot that's most the fight won there

find a muay thai not a kickboxing one, everyone knows how stand infront of you and throw a punch and may knock you out but thai clinching and start to knee then it's all you they cant throw anything back, not so effective against tall guys though

knee to balls, headbutt/elbow to face then get the fuck outta there before more people join in. best bet is not to hang around fukwits that are likely to get you into trouble. barstools, bottles, glasses are also an option if your in a corner and up against numbers.

i wouldnt go lookin for fights if i were you

agreed with dark knight...Just dont loose your chance and let the opponent hit you first...well I like hitting with elbows backward in the face...

You should learn some combatives. There are alot of street defense ones. But above all, attitude and willpower is king. Fight hard and have an alpha male type of thinking.

I didn't mean literally. I mean figuratively. In other words, avoid situations that result in fighting. It isn't like it was 20 years ago when guys could just 'wing it'. So many guys train now that you could really get fucked up and your life can get turned upside down. Not knowing how to fight simply means you are not interested in fighting. If you were, you would pick up some sort of training, like you do bodybuilding.

Hold on to what ever is near your hands and hit your opponent first. Look for something hard like a stool, a piece of wood anything.

I've found that studying ww2 hand-to-hand and some reality based combat stuff does wonders for most. You can learn the ww2 stuff in about 6 weeks IF you have access to a BOB(punching/striking bag that looks like a dude). A street fight is a FAR cry from an MMA fight or a bjj match. I'd suggest boxing and the ww2 hand-to-hand stuff. Also, this is a GREAT forum but there are better places to ask advice about fighting. warriortalk.com is one I frequent a pretty good bit. Take my advice for what it's worth, I'm just a cop. But, that's my .02 and what I've seen that works. One thing you have to remember is this: avoid the fight at all costs and DO NOT LOSE. If you get in a fight, fuck that mother fucker up. Use pepper spray, an impact weapon, gun or whatever else you can. Try to avoid it. Be extremely careful of what you say to the cops when they come to speak with you for fucking his world up. I would make a list of lines to use and rehearse them until you know them well. If you kill someone, your mind will be in a million different places and, honestly, it will fuck you up for a while. Moreso if you do it with your hands. It is important to make damn sure everyone around you knows you tried to avoid the fight at all costs. Unfornutately, it's usually guys asking for advice that start fights to prove themselves. That's all fine and dandy until they run into the ONE guy in the bar who isn't looking for trouble, but damn sure isn't afriad of it. He's the one guy that will punch you in the throat, grab you by the throad and kick you in the balls, break your collar bone, break your fingers while wrestling, poke you in the eyes, spray you with pepper spray and then commence to beating you beyond recognition(do I NEED to go on??), etc... So don't be that guy. Kelly McCann(i think that's his name) has some good videos on reality based combat. Check them out. Also, a knife is your friend. A 3 inch knife will reach some vital targets, a 4 inch knife will reach most vital targets but a 5 inch knife will reach ALL vital targets. Stab early, stab hard and stab often. Always cut above the eyes and on the forearms. Get that bastard to seeing his own blood and he'll change his mind damn quick about what he is doing.

Lastly, all of this was said for ENTERTAINMENT purposes only and has never been used by the author. Nor will it ever be. I am a vegetarian and I avoid confrontation at all costs. The end.

ozzie just cuz your big heavy and strong as bull doesnt mean you can fight. i havent drank in 2 years because that leads to fights, but another thing that greatly leads to fights is ppl who are known to fight, everyone wants to fight em, or ppl who are really big. if u are big and tuff lookin someone is gonna want to fight u. so im guessing thats the case. most untrained fighters always throw a haymaker, a quick jab will end that due to the time it takes to throw each punch. if you dont have punching technique and throw without a plan its a 50/50 fight as to who will land first. majority of fights in a bar for me usually end up in the other person grabbing on to my arms and its a struggling match. now i am small and there have been bigger ppl who have the strength to throw me down, and then get on top and pummel me into shit. (im only 180 at best). i do train at a muay thai gym and clinch training is the best for street fighting seeing as everyone always grabs ahold. i like to kick the inside of their knees. knee them in the balls/stomach. or just wind up and headbutt the fuck out of there faces. and personally i enjoy fighting roid boys who look like competition bodybuilders. they are too big and slow and dont know how to do anything. yeah there head is like a rock, and cores are hard as a sequoia tree. but fuckem they cant fight!!!!! if i was you if your right handed, go in aggressively, lead with a left jab. grab ahold and head butt or knee them. or alternate both of those. ur big and stronger than most. the last place u want to be when fighting a tougher guy than u is in his grips. then when he starts to go down, get ontop and destroy. elbows are also fucking phenomenal, and are great close range weapons when your too close to punch. but no offense, you need to learn to punch first so avoid that except for a jab to put them on their heals. lol

i am a year away from my black belt in kyokushin karate. be doing muay thai for about 4 years, boxing on and off for a couple years, and 6 months in bjj. and hopefully soon to get into a judo camp

Wow thats sum advice. A ass kicked will be 100% times worse if you use a bottle or glass against some one.

jesse, again, the OP is asking about DEFENSE.
assuming someone is being an aggressor, i dont think it's ever sound advice to say "fight fair and fight clean" in a bar brawl or street fight.
why should i vow to fight fair just so i dont get "my ass kicked worse" and risk getting seriously injured?

check out senshido shredder, defendo, etc. all combative defense arts. very effective, and i guarantee when you shredder some asshole's face he'll think twice before he even looks at you again.

wear those nike rip off pants so u can get naked easily. noone wants to fight a naked guy. get in close and rub ur wiener on him. ive had doorman not even kick me out cuz they dont want dick on them. they just yell at me to put my clothes back on. although im a small town boy so its a little more chill

thats one major reason i stopped drinking a couple years ago. i was always getting naked. at bars, house partys, outside at night on the way home. if i blacked out, i got naked. simple as that

Go and ask the biggest meanest bouncer you know, but certainly NEVER ask it on a forum with internet warriors, because everyone treats their opinion as stone-cold truth due to the effect street fighting has on the male ego.

ha. bouncers are required to take a class on how to dismantle a situation with words not violence. most ppl arent dumb enough to hit the bouncer its like an unwritten law, and lastly there are multiple bouncers at a time. bottom line is if u fight, there is gonna be a time you get ur ass handed to u whether ur the agressor or not so if u dont like that, then back off. even for silva or gsp or the ppl in the ufc. all it takes is one lucky punch to the chin, kidneys, throat or balls. if u get punched in the middle of an exhale in the chest, ur not gonna be breathing for a minute or 2. all u can do is train and learn to minimalize your chance of losing and raise your confidence in a fighting situation. plus in a bar fight any random person near the fight is gonna cheap shot u. dont ever think its one on one. me and 4 friends got the shit kicked out of us once buy the entire 25 person Cold Lake hockey team. i still fucked buddys girl so ha, but damn what an ass kicking. broken nose, busted ribs. one of the hockey guys looked at my buddy and pointed to me and said is that who fucked her, he looked to confirm and boom, dropped in one punch while lookin the other way. one guy is a machine he did well, but the other 2 were so drunk one guy hoodied the other and started feeding him shots, the hockey team didnt even know what to do, so they waited till they were done with each other then kicked the shit out of both of them. dont fight alone and hope for the best pretty much

Which is something everyone should take. It useful in non-hostile confrontations as well. I believe the English term is "verbal judo". Almost every fight can be avoided if you swallow your ego.

On the other hand, something else bouncers have that more valuable than any martial art is experience on the street.

I've bounced for over 5 years and seen quite a few "tough guys" choke when shit go serious. Those guys have fight training, but the adrenaline rush is a lot different on the street. Shit can escalate and get out of control very quickly.

most ppl arent dumb enough to hit the bouncer its like an unwritten law, and lastly there are multiple bouncers at a time.

I guess you'd be surprised how dumb people get with enough alcohol and/or drugs in their body. But indeed, I never worked alone. Numeric superiority is still the safest thing to have.

bottom line is if u fight, there is gonna be a time you get ur ass handed to u whether ur the agressor or not so if u dont like that, then back off.

If there is a way to back off, always do. This might be the best advice I can give anyone.

Seriously, I have seen life-changing stuff happen over the silliest of arguments. Leave your ego at the door. It's all fun if a few fists fly and the only thing truly hurt are egos. But then suddenly some drunk pulls out a knife and stabs a guy in the liver over a fucking dropped coat. I never knew humans had that much blood in them.

even for silva or gsp or the ppl in the ufc. all it takes is one lucky punch to the chin, kidneys, throat or balls. if u get punched in the middle of an exhale in the chest, ur not gonna be breathing for a minute or 2. all u can do is train and learn to minimalize your chance of losing and raise your confidence in a fighting situation. plus in a bar fight any random person near the fight is gonna cheap shot u. dont ever think its one on one. me and 4 friends got the shit kicked out of us once buy the entire 25 person Cold Lake hockey team. i still fucked buddys girl so ha, but damn what an ass kicking. broken nose, busted ribs. one of the hockey guys looked at my buddy and pointed to me and said is that who fucked her, he looked to confirm and boom, dropped in one punch while lookin the other way. one guy is a machine he did well, but the other 2 were so drunk one guy hoodied the other and started feeding him shots, the hockey team didnt even know what to do, so they waited till they were done with each other then kicked the shit out of both of them. dont fight alone and hope for the best pretty much

You must be very proud.

anyone who has taken full contact tournament style martial arts like kyokushin, boking, muay thai is just as well off as someone who is a street fighter. they are actually better off cuz they actually know how to fight. u think the end all and be all to fighting is being a bouncer. well a bouncer has no better of a chance winning than anyone else. especially someone who knows how to fight. by your logic a marine is a better fighter because of the death and tragedy he has seen? no, its because of his combat training. and no i am not proud, i think its funny but my point was i have been fighting my whole life, on the street in martial arts tournaments. maybe 1 on 1 i could have knocked every one of those guys out, but we'll never find out cuz there was a whole hockey team against 5. thats how real life goes. i have kicked alot of ass in my life, and ive had my ass kicked many times too. the best you could do is learn the basics of a well rounded striking martial art like muay thai, not a self defence or workout kickboxing or kickboxercise class, but a real muay thai tournament style camp. kyokushin, even boxing, jeet kun do,

When fighting for your life remember your teeth/jaw is your ultimate weapon, it doesn't take a very strong person to remove a large chunk of flesh and get a horrifying amount of blood to come gushing out, fight over.

Also the collarbone is a nice target, an elbow can break it and end the fight. At least that's what I've been taught, never tried it on a live opponent.

Look into kinetic linking. Lot's of people throw big punches but don't even do damage. I really don't want to try and sound tough, as there are millions of people that can whip my ass, but I can take a hit like nothing. I doubt I've been hit 'right'.

Don't hit someone once and wait for a response. Hit em, and already be coming in with the next hit. Kinetic linking let's you use your weight. The more you weigh, the harder you can hit. I broke a man's clavicle. Best hit I've ever laid, didn't hurt my hand or anything. You KNOW when a hit is good. I've only been in 4 fights in my entire life, though. Had to go to court for the guy with a 'broke face', but had many witness that it was in self defense. Haven't been in a fight in 2 years. Nicest guy you will meet unless you hit on my woman or simply try and pick on me. I have no fight training, so I don't have many tips except make your hits count. Make em hurt. A sloppy punch is a waste of energy.

Debating on posting this. I do not know a lot about fighting. I am not a bad ass. And you are better off not fighting because, at least in my experience, you stay pretty riled up for 6+ weeks after.

Freakshow85, Very true. You must hit more than once. You keep the pressure on till you feel safe to stop.
Ozzie, any word on your training since this thread was started?

best tip for someone w/ no training is to get training. even 1x per week is gonna add up and make you safe on the street pretty quickly.

other than that keep your hands up.

If you have the opportunity, muay thai is an excellent thing to study as far as protecting yourself in a street fight. Teaches you distance, mid-range, and close range striking, as well as how to utilize your elbows/knees instead of just relying on hands. By simply following youtube videos long before I started training I managed to develop a pretty nasty elbow, and in a self defence situation, it didn't let me down; one hit and he was out cold, than I got the hell outta there before anyone else decided to fight me.

Becoming situationally aware, if it's turning out ugly crazy always wins...

the crazy person in a fight always wins, don't believe me??? it's what they teach rangers now for the past 12 yrs...

Learn to run, if someone pulls a gun and is attempting to rob you, give them the money and run.. if it's a fight and they pull a gun, same advice...

by the way, i'm armed 90% of the time, if i need to take a gun to a bar because it seems like a rough bar, i don't go.. if you disarm me and i'm on the floor getting my ass kicked and become unconscious and you keep kicking me, my wife will produce a gun and shoot 2 to the body, 1 to the head.. it's called situational conditioning..

Ive been training for 5 yrs and fight for Nemesis MMA. BJJ and Muay Thai . Most all fights go to the ground knowing how to gain position is key. Learn basic bjj and youll de rail most every street fight. As for striking boxing is best for that. I personally do not use my hands to hurt only distract.. my kicks will fuck you up faster than my punches will. lol. If i were to give you quick advice id say boot him in the chest as if you were kicking down a steel door, close the distance clinch behind the neck knee to the face, go to the ground elbow the shit out of em get back up and go back to your bish and beer.

i personally dont believe the crazy guy wins.. i believe 95% of the time the more trained person will win... 2 untrained guys.. whoever gets lucky lol.. ok then maybe the crazy guy.

That's about the size of it. If you don't know, learn! You can't learn just the theory you need to practise. You can read all you want and watch as many videos as you like but without actual practise including sparring you're wasting your time. Even when you HAVE trained for many years you need to learn to control the adrenaline dump you get when a fight starts, it can be your biggest ally or your worst enemy if you don't know how to use it.

I think thats the best part of real training is being able to stay calm and focused during intense situations.... self defense or otherwise.

the whole "go crazy" thing is completely over rated.... if you ever see a real fight start and one guy is going nuts and the other guy is calm and cool w/ a lil smile on his face... id pick the calm guy everytime

I gotta agree with JT on this Pretending to go crazy can sometimes scare off a potential attacker, I call it controlled aggression, but actually going nuts means you aren't thinking or focussing on the situation at hand.

No fights ***

Always avoid a street fight if you can. Sometimes its better to swallow your pride than to do a few nights in the county!

Top Bottom
