defense system...
cmon
not saying it cant be great i mean people gotta eat and all but
how was the class structured.. what did they do? did the 'spar' ?
Yeah, we regularly have a good laugh at the name. =)
Yes it's great, although subtle and difficult to wrap your brain around. A lot of very capable people have given Systema high praise.
Structured? Sortof I suppose, but not as such. The idea is to train for naturalness and fluidity of action. There is slow sparring as part of training, and students can go at whatever pace with their partner which they agree to.

Spetsnaz hand to hand training is primarily Russian Sambo based from what I've read.
This is Systema, not Sambo. It might be called "Combat Sambo Spetsnaz", but even then it's not anything like sambo.

I wanna do amteur MMA comps in the future, don't know if this will help for fighting. I never heard of any fighters using this sytem.
This is a touchy issue for a lot of practitioners. This isn't preparation for MMA competition, it's meant for real-life / real-world defence. I would say it's a different school of thought.
Systema is excellent stuff for calisthenics and theory, but I would say that you'd have to cross-train to get actual competition skills.. training with something which is focused on issues specific to mma.
One of the UFC's earliest successful fighters,Oleg Taktarov was a Sambo specialist, and I believe he started his training in the russian military.
Oleg and Vladimir Vasiliev, the head instructor outside of Russia, know oneanother and even collaborated on an video together some time ago.

If you want to become an MMA fighter...
I think it is best to get your feet wet with the basics in Wrestling, Muay Thai and BJJ, go to schools and take classes that teach those individualy... Once you have the basics down, find a good school to learn MMA/Vale Tudo type fighting to put it all together
I totally agree.

Anyhow.. there's a lot to learn about the art out there. Here are some resources, and I'm available to answer some questions, although the forum is a good resource for that.
