Actually, I was reading that a new study found something like 59 genetic markers for obesity, proving that obesity is strongly caused by genetics.
So, despising someone for having that body type is like despising them for the color of their skin.
Heather has a point, however, we probably all have the propensity to be fat.
This theory is called the 'thrifty gene'. Think about the last time you went camping, in a tent. What was it like to be living outside?
You may have been lucky and had great weather. Now think about winter camping.
Think that there is no where to get food but what you collect yourself.
This is what it has been like for humans for most of our existance.
Our biochemistry and physiology has not yet 'caught up' with modern living.
Even look at how much life has changed in the last 40-50 years with labour saving devices, everyone having cars, the type of food.
Basically, those that could put on loads of fat when there was food had a much easier time surviving.
There is also an issue with what people eat now. The combination of simple carbohydrates (sugars, fructose........) and saturated fats and modified fats (trans), have been shown to affect the membranes of all of our cells.
All our cells have this phospholipid membrane. All sorts of receptors stick out of it, some get transported to the membrane surface in the presence of other things, for example, insulin trigger the glucose transporters (GLUT 1 through 5 depending on the cell type).
Messed up fatty acids (saturated and sugar/trans) are thought to JAM up these receptors, also make the membranes less fluid so the receptors and transporters don't work as well.
This is mainly on the skeletal muscle, so if glucose does not go into the muscle (or liver), it goes into making more FAT.
This is referred to as insulin insensitivity.
It is not just carbs that make fat, obviously fat can be added to fat/adipose cells, and also protein can be made into fat.
That our bodies CAN and WILL turn everything into fat makes it obvious how important this was to our survival.
Another problem is that after we were weaned, humans mostly used to drink water, so it is thought that the body does not 'register' and adapt to liquid calories as much as it does to solid calories.
There is a theory that we need to eat about 1.5 kg of food per day, otherwise we will continue to eat.
Think about the calories in a packet of crisps/chips. LOADS.
Think about the weight of a packet of crisps/chips MINIMAL.
I just made a low carb veggie stew. I threw in 1 kg of veg in total. I was astonished when I was working out the kcals, it was only 290 kcals in the entire thing!!!!!
That is less than a choccie bar, which is usually about 50 g, this was 1000 g.
We are designed to eat nutrient dense, energy poor food. And currently, we are eating the opposite, nutrient poor, energy dense food.
Interesting, there is this other theory called the
AMERICAN PARADOX.
Despite the fact that the fat content in the diet has been decreasing over the last 20 years, the occurence of obesity has been on the increase.
This is because they put in loads of SUGAR into low fat foods, and modified fat. And as I just explained, that combo is a recipe for a fat butt.
