Farewell all, doctor says I can never lift weights again

BassMaster said:
I went to the doctor for some lower back pain last week. He had me take my shirt off and ask me about my chest being sunken in. I never really gave it a second thought but he gave me some tests and ask me some family history... Well yesterday I went to a specialist and got an EKG, turns out I have Marfan's Syndrome. I always thought I was just an extremely tall lanky guy, and now I have an uncurable heart disease. My dad is built almost exactly like I am so he is going in to the doctor tomorrow for an EKG to find out if he has it.

Should have realized it sooner, my grandpa died when he was 49, his dad when he was 32.

No more weights ever...it has been a big part of my life for the last year and a half. Really going to miss it :(

Oh well, shit happens.
Marfan's is a specialty condition, you need special care and consideration and advice. You'll get your best treatment in a big university/teaching hospital working with a physician whose specializing in this and related conditions.

Yeah, I agree, keep getting more opinions. You should be able to do something physical to keep you active and to create a balanced life. I can't imagine that you can't enjoy any type of physical sport.
Good luck, let us know how the other opinions go.

People with Marfan syndrome are prone to aortic dissections. I hope he also did an echocardiogram (in addition to the EKG). You should also have a CT scan done to make sure your aorta isn't dilated.

If you ever have chest pain, go to the ED immediately and have a CT scan done of your chest. Aortic dissections can be fatal in minutes.

Sounds like u need a second opinion... I don't trust any doctor that says you can NEVER do something like exercise. Maybe going for PR triples is too much of a strain.. but certainly there are forms of lifting that can provide you with great benefit and contribute to your long term health.

Depending on your risk of heart, eye or skeletal complications, your doctor may recommend that you avoid contact sports, such as football or basketball, and other strenuous activities that strain your muscles, ligaments and aorta, such as weightlifting.

That was cut and pasted. it is a connective tissue disorder of sorts. any staring on your muscles heart or lungs can cause more dammage than good.

I wish you the best bro. take care and do what your MD reccommends. if he is a good doc then he will send you somewhere they can treat ya.
